question for pedal brainiacs

I've got a chorus pedal that works pretty well for the most part. But when I pick a bit harder there is a lot of crackle and fuzz along with the chorus sound.

What would cause this? It's as if the chorus pedal is distorting. :yell:

Re: question for pedal brainiacs

Every pedal has a certain amount of headroom, and that's basically the hidden difference between cheap and expensive pedals. Normally, the analog pedals with a simple circuit handle hard picking much better than digital or complex circuits like
Line 6, Boss, or DOD. The answer might be to sell it and upgrade.

Re: question for pedal brainiacs

^Yep. I had that problem (or some problem of the sort!) all the time with my DOD Envelope Filter.

What chorus pedal are you using?

Re: question for pedal brainiacs

Overloading the front end. Had one of those cheap Danelectro pepperoni phasers that did that. Just go with it. :)

Re: question for pedal brainiacs

keeping the batteries fresh or using an AC adapter is important to maximising headroom (i.e reducing crackle on hard hit notes) .. another idea is to use it in your amp's effects loop and adjust the 'effects send' level to being 'just' loud enough so that the loudest notes do not create the crackle .. you can use the 'effects return' level to drive the rest of your amp ... then turn the master volume up on your amp (post loop) to get the volume you want

good luck
