Question for the other bassists

1st off, El CHupacabra has returned from winter hiatus! WOO Celebrate me!

2nd off,

what's the "standard" gauging for bass strings? My uncle got me a Fender Steel core-nickel wound that goes .045, .065, .085 and .105

Any clarification would be helpful!

Re: Question for the other bassists

There's no standard, just like guitars. It all depends on what you wanna do. I use that gauge set on my P-Bass 'cause I want it fat and warm. If I was playing slap on a Jazz Bass I'd use a much lighter set.

At first I thought your thread was titled, "Question for the other bassist"!:lmao:

Re: Question for the other bassists

.105 is like .10

its like "standard".

if im not mistaken.

about basses: bigger doesnt equal better. any string worth its length will do.

i use ernie ball, i like to use stainless steel strings if i can find em.

stay bright (cleaner sounding) for a long time.

Re: Question for the other bassists

mm hmm, mm hmm. I was wondering if there was a bass equivalent to the .010-.046 for guitars. Nice ideas, still I'm gonna stick w/ the .045-.105. Just waiting for the new strings to mellow out some.

Re: Question for the other bassists

I always used the standard D'Addario 105 set or if I was feeling rich I got LaBella Deep Talkin 105's. Don't play bass much anymore but that's what I set my bass players guitars up with too.

Re: Question for the other bassists

Most basses are strung from the factory with 40-95, 45-100 is a bit heavier, and I personally prefer 50-105.

it´s hard to equate bass strings to guitar strings, but if I had to based on frequency of use and tension, I would put 40-95 @ .009s, 45-100 @ .010s and 50-105 at .011s to .012s.

Re: Question for the other bassists

+ 1 on there being no universal Standard gauge.

I have a fondness for a specific brand's .043 - .110 set. (No points for guessing.) To me, it feels "right" and is handy for down tuning the low E string. Unfortunately, some of my basses cannot seem to handle the tension. Those ones get .040 - .095 or .040 - .100. The flatwounds on my Squier Silver Series P are .040 - .100

I´m not gonna guess, but I´d like to know, as I prefer a lighter G string and a heavier E string but don´t like making custom bass sets out of singles for cost reasons as it´s not a primary instrument for me.

Re: Question for the other bassists

^^ Does Funkfingers prefer to use Rotosound, BSX or Shadow strings? All 3 brands show up in a google search for that guage and have a packaged set. I´m assuming he uses the Rotosound Billy Sheehan set, as the other 2 manufacturers are somewhat obscure, but I´d like to know for sure.

I searched before I asked, but Google doesn´t answer personal questions. ;)

I think I've always used Nickel Round Wound 50-105 except on the T-Bird where I use the 45-100s. (and that's done more for voicing than it is feel)

I prefer the D'Addario Nickel Round Wound 50-105s on my other basses.

I like the D'Addario XL Chrome (.045,.065,.080,.100) warm mellow flat wound. My fingers glide across the strings. Of course this is my option and the sound and tone I like which fits right for the music I play. It's kinda old school, but it works well....lol!

Again if you want a snare drum, bright sound round wounds are good if you want a deep warm low end sound then I would say flat wounds.......it's really up to sound, style music, and what you like hearing.

Well spotted, Z. Funkfingers destroys his fingertips on Rotosound BS66 strings. He does not claim to possess even one percent of the talent of Mr. S. He just agrees with Sheehan's ideas about string tension/feel on a Precision-type bass. :)
