Question for the single coil guru's...

So I was reading the thread regarding the Antiquity single coil bridge pickups and it got me thinking about something. If I understand things correctly, overwinding a pickup will yield a lower treble response and possibly boosting a little low end. Then we have these Fralin/Callaham base plates that essentially do the same thing, correct? What are the differences going to be between an overwound pickup or a standard wind with the base plate gonna be in terms of tone, tambre, feel, etc. etc.? Thanks in advance!

Re: Question for the single coil guru's...

they sorta do something similar but its not the same thing, or at least doesnt sound the same.

over winding reduces the treble while increasing mids, bass and output.

the baseplate reduces treble and maybe output a touch but doesnt boost anything. it changes the magnetic field

Re: Question for the single coil guru's...

Callaham offers the baseplate as a way to tame an excessively trebly Stratocaster bridge pickup. (On a vintage Strat circuit, the bridge PU has no tone control.)

My method is to add a jumper to the selector switch so that the bridge PU shares the same tone pot as the middle pickup.

i do that, cos im not into super cutting tones, but it is very different sounding to having an overwound pickup. It just kinda tames the high end a bit.

Re: Question for the single coil guru's...

To me the overwound pickup tames the highs, but boosts mids and overall output, whereas the baseplate tames the highs and gives a more rounded tonal balance without the boost.

what about the inverse?

how would one get a glassy "loud" single coil sound
