so i just bought a JB humbucker (for an ibanez SV470)...my friend and i installed it, at least mostly...we got all the wiring connected and i know the thing works, but here's the problem: the screws that came with the pickup (you know...the ones you put through the springs) don't actually FIT the holes in the back plate of the pickup...so my question is "is this normal??"

are these screws actually supposed to screw into the body of the guitar instead of fitting into the holes in the back plate of the pickup? or is this a defect, and i should exchange the pickup or give seymour duncan a call??

any advice is helpful..thanks,

jarrod.

They should work, did you try useing the old ones ? And no, they dont screw into the body.

That doesn't sound right at all. I've bought probably a dozen SD pups and the screws have always been right. They can be tough to get started as the spring is longer than the screw, but the more I do it the eaiser it gets.

Did you try putting the screws in the threaded holes before you put the pup in the guitar (maybe a dumb question, but lets cover all the bases). Worse case scenario, you can take the pickup down to your local Ace Hardward (they have the best selection of screws I have found) and find some the right length and size, and try them right there in the store. $.40 and you're in business.

yeah i tried all that...the screws are just way to small for the holes..and one of the holes is bigger than the other one, as well

Was this a used pup or brand new? If new I would definately take it back. If used, finding a couple of odd sized screws at Ace may be you're only option. It can still be done. Bummer

Another vote for Ace Hardware screws. What I did, though, was just cut my springs a bit to shorten the length. Don't do that unless you know it's safe. You might cut your hand, or made your springs go flying accross the room, never to be found again. :(

brand new pickup..but i've already screwed around with the wiring and everything

It must be a JB Trembucker....right? Not a standard JB....right? Each leg on both sides of the baseplate has three holes....right? The two outside holes are untapped ...you can't get a screw into them unless you have them tapped. You should be able to get the adjustment screw to thread into the middle hole without a problem tho. I'll bet that's it. If not, I have no idea what's wrong.

Try the screw again in the middle hole. Try it without the spring just to see if it'll thread in OK. If it does, the pickup is normal...that's the way they all are if it's a Trembucker.

So stick the screw through the pickguard or mounting ring, slide the spring over the screw, compress the spring somehow, and get one adjustment screw in each leg started in the middle hole only.

That should get you going in the right direction.

Nice call Lew....I've never bought a tremspaced pickup, so that didn't even cross my mind. Quality control is so good at SD that I can't imagine a pup comming out that had seperate screw hole sizes....although anything is possible I guess.

no it's a standard one..and just one hole on both legs...just a regular humbucker..two holes..two screws..two springs...pretty much self-explanatory, the screws just don't fit the holes..so i'm guessing i should exchange it, eh?

I guess so...that is really weird. I wonder if you are using metric screws in a pickup tapped for sae threads or if possibly the holes didn't get tapped or something. Yeah...take it back and have the dealer figure it out. Lew
