Questions about shredding?

When guitarists shred.... Do they use the tremolo-picking technique then? It`s a certain point when it gets so fast that you have to use that technique in order to pick fast enough.... Am I right here...?

Re: Questions about shredding?

Sortof, it's actually controlled alternate picking, but there doing it at such a speed it technically is trem picking.

Re: Questions about shredding?

I was under the impression that trem picking was a fast succession of notes, usually in 32nd's or 16ths, while alternate picking was just up down up down etc...

Sorg-
No. In order for fast picked runs to sound good your right and left hand must be perfectly syncronized. If you just tremelo pick and move your left hand around it will sound sloppy and not too cool. Sometimes your left and right hands will lose their syncronization and it will sound extremely sloppy. The dude in Living Color for example. Listen to Paul Gilbert for some perfect picking.

Yep Paul Gilbert is a prime example of a perfect High Speed Picker..

Re: Questions about shredding?

But when it gets really fast... Does he not use tremolo picking then...?

Re: Questions about shredding?

its the same technique, just controlled better

paul gilbert's left hand moves perfectly in synch with his right - technically his left hand is trem picking, yes, but his right hand puts out a clear, distinct note with each stroke

Re: Questions about shredding?

Tremolo picking is when a guitarist imitates the way a mandolin is picked. Your left hand is playing quarter notes, for example, and your right hand is picking them as 16ths.

"Shredding" can apply to any fast, technical playing. Some shredding is done with very few strokes (arpeggios, sweep picking), and good portion of it is done with some combination of alternate picking and legato technique (hammer on/pull off).

Another technique is called circular picking. And don't forget two-handed tapping!!

Re: Questions about shredding?

Try playing 32nd's with downpicking. :)

Tremolo is technically alternate picking. Tremolo means playing the same note many times in succession using alternate picking.
