Questions regarding locking tuners

I was thinking of changing the standard tuners on my american standard strat(it was made in 1993) with locking tuners........probably Schaller. I do not want to drill holes e.t.c in the headstock in order to install the new tuners. Are the schallers a direct replacement for am std strat tuners? Will these ones do the job?

How locking tuners affect tone and sustain? Is there a noticeable increase in tuning stability even if i don't change the nut/tremolo system?

I recall hearing that the schaller-made locking tuners that are made for Fender "drop right in" from the regular non-locking Schallers that come on MIA strats but I'm unsure of this. Can somebody confirm? I think they're these: http://guitar-parts.com/content/estore_details.asp?product=761

When I switched over to Sperzels on my instrument i noticed a stronger, clearer tone and better tonal integrity as well as added sustain.

Yes. :)

Re: Questions regarding locking tuners

As long as you lubricate the nut slots with graphite (there are a couple ways to do that) or have a Graph Tech nut, Corian, or some other slippery material, locking tuners will improve your tuning stability. Don't think they will affect tone or sustain unless there's a huge weight difference. They will make string changes faster.

Somebody else better tell you if those are direct replacements for your guitar.

Re: Questions regarding locking tuners

Schaller makes a drop-in replacement for most Fender models, and they don't require any screws. They also make locking tuners with screw tabs, so it's important to get the right ones. I think you want the ones that are sold under the Fender name. Do an EBay search for "Fender Schaller," you should get some results.

I have a set on my Warmoth Strat, they work very well. I don't think there's any difference in tone. I actually recommend the model with the screw tabs, because they are also staggered in height, which eliminates the need for string trees. I'm not sure if the drop-in replacement models have the height stagger. I've drilled numerous headstocks for tuner mounting holes, it's not difficult at all.
