quick duncan active pups questions

I see that the blackouts are all the rage so what do these resemble tonally?
I really dont go for the 81/85 tone
would i be better off trying the dave mustiane set?
i hear these are basically a active JB/jazz set which to me is superior to the 81/85 set

Your understanding of the pickup´s tonalities is correct from what I´ve heard.

Therefore, the assumption that the DM set would probably suit you better if you like the JB/Jazz combo and dislike the way EMGs sound is very likely spot on the way I see it

Yep, I've heard the blackouts and they are very much the EMG sound. So, if you don't like the 81/85 I'd go with the Mustaines or Livewires.
