Quick question about soldering guitar parts

So if you read my previous thread about the spectrum strat I received from giving my friend a speaker, you know that I will soon be modding it but before I jump in I have a quick question about soldering. Do I need to use the flux my solder came with? and if so how? Thanks for all the help.

Traded a speaker for a Charvel Spectrum, I'm assuming.

Flux is good for cleaning the tip of the iron. While not required to use, it's a good thing to have.

Okay thanks, I thought it was crucial to use flux or the solder wouldn't bond with what I'm soldering it to

I've never really used flux in soldering electronics, but I have used it for helping my dad do a plumbing job in a house we were fixing up.

Flux (petroleum/rosin) isn't used to clean the tip of a soldering iron...it's used to help the solder to flow and to "stick". It's also an aid in "tinning" the tip. Most solder wire for electronics already has a rosin (flux) core, reducing the need to use additional flux. But sometimes it can be helpful. If you are using a solid solder (without the rosin core) you will need to use flux.

To clean a soldering iron tip, a wet sponge or copper wire coil works best. And to tin the tip, Sal Ammoniac works best. It can be used with a lead-free, rosin-free tip tinner for excellent results.

Well then how do I use the flux when soldering?

Most solder has flux inside. You normally don't need extra flux.

^ exactly what I suggested. But when you find that you DO need to use some flux (and I have had many occasions where it was definitely beneficial, even using rosin core solder), you just place a little on the metal then solder as usual.

Okay thanks! I beleive the solder I have requires additional flux

I found out that the solder i had was crap so I returned it for some rosin core, thanks for the help!
