Quilt Top vs Flame Les Paul

Are Quilt tops as collectable as Flames and therefore appreciate as much?

Does a one piece top make a significant difference in price and collectability?

Any comments would be appreciated. TIA.

Re: Quilt Top vs Flame Les Paul

one piece tops are super rare because the way bookmatching works requires two pieces of wood to give you the symmetry.

as to whether a one piece top would add significant value.....no idea.

personally i hate quilt patterns, flame all the way but again i have no idea how they relate to collectability.

so all in all my post on your thread was probably completely pointless

Re: Quilt Top vs Flame Les Paul

I've NEVER seen a one piece flame top!!! I agree with Xssive, I don't think L.Ps look right with quilt tops! But on the other hand PRS's look great with a quilted top... don't ask me why?

Re: Quilt Top vs Flame Les Paul

I like quilt tops, but they have to look right and be in the right color before I like 'em...

That being said, I don't know if it increases the value. To someone who digs quilt tops and the particular color, then sure, someone might pay a little extra for it.

Re: Quilt Top vs Flame Les Paul

I saw a matching set of custom shop Les Pauls years ago- one was a flame top standard, the other was a quilt top custom- both in tobacco burst. The flame top looked soo much nicer

With everything being veneered and photoflamed these days, soon I don't think flame and quilt tops will be all that collectable

Re: Quilt Top vs Flame Les Paul

I've seen one piece flame and quilt tops on very high end PRS guitars. Usually the flame or quilt isn't as extreme as if it was bookmatched

I figure REAL flame and quilt will be just as collectable, if not moreso as quality pieces of wood become harder to find.

I think in the future we'll be seeing what the japanese do- use real maple and veneer flame or quilt maple over the top- so you get the same tone qualities with the looks of quilt of flame maple

Re: Quilt Top vs Flame Les Paul

Quilt isn't as popular as flame, but the right quilt will jazz me. Looks especially great with butterscotch, had a butterscotch-quilt LP Elegant I wish I could have kept.

Re: Quilt Top vs Flame Les Paul

I like flame better for the most part, but the ocean blue quilt top on a PRS is one of the most beauitful guitars ever imo.

Re: Quilt Top vs Flame Les Paul

i love quilt, quilt is pretty. and i like flame, its rock n' roll. black flame though, that is sexy.

Re: Quilt Top vs Flame Les Paul

if you go to warmoth or other luthier (or whatever you want to call it) site and quilt maple is always the most expensive type of maple.

in the past couple of years, the price of quilt maple has more than doubled because international suppliers and supply in general are depleting.

the price of flame has gone up about one quarter in the same time.

if you want a beautiful investment, get quilt. if you want a fiddleback rock machine, get the flame. if you just wanna PLAY YER GUITAR, get a photoflame beater.

Re: Quilt Top vs Flame Les Paul

I like quilt tops better then flame tops on any guitars but then again im not the biggest fan of the traditional les paul bursts (apart from honeyburst). As for value sorry i wouldn't really know.

Re: Quilt Top vs Flame Les Paul

Quilt > flame

I think I feel that way because I've seen my fair share of cherry and honey burst flame top LPs.

Re: Quilt Top vs Flame Les Paul

Likem both.... Can't forget plaintops though..... Have to appreciate them as well... :32:
