rack mounted heads?

i am thinking aobut buying a mesa 50 cal+ rackmountable head. i have been wanting a 50 cal for awhile now but am not sure this would be the way to go. i have looked a several auctions for the amps and for some reason the rackmounted heads are cheaper than the regular ones. is there any sound difference or is it just a cosmetic thing?

It's cosmetic, and probably cheaper because they're just giving you rack ears instead of a handcrafted cabinet. I've often heard Mesa fans saying that the rackmounted Dual Rec was made better than the regular ones, and sounds better, but that's just info I heard.
