Railhammer alternative

Hi,

I just ordered a b-stock ibanez RC520 and I'm thinking of making it my "Smashing pumpkins" guitar :)
It's quite close spec-wise to Corgan's signature reverend which sounds awesome, and the logical thing to do would be to put railhammer billy corgan's in the RC,
but it seems it's almost impossible for me to get those pick-ups for a decent price.

Anyone who has suggestions for an alternative to these?

I would also like to add the bass contour circuit, but I'm not sure it's possible as the RC only has two pots so ..

Thanks for the advice!

Re: Railhammer alternative

You could use a dual concentric pot for regular & bass-cut tone controls.

As for pickups, Railhammers are pretty unique - I have a number of the humbuckers and I love 'em. You could be better off saving up to get a set of the ones you really want.

If you must find a lower-cost substitute to the BC model I might suggest going with a set of strong P90s. They'll have rude mids and good cut but they won't be noise cancelling like the Railhammers. The stacked-coil type noiseless P90s that I've owned have been a little too polite - not quite the same as the real thing.

It's not so much about the cost, it's more that I can't find a dealer in Europe..

I found that, but any country close to Belgium doesn't list them on the website :)

Railhammers are flat out awesome... The blade makes bass tight, but treble sluggs are big and give a thick but clear tone.

Also you could do concentric ir push pull for bass roll by presetting amount of rolloff with a trim pot in the cavity.

But I love to roll bass up and down and prefer the pot.

I have a 12 string Yamaha Pacifica that I wanted to install a bass contour in, but it only has room for 2 pots without modifying the pickguard and control cavity. While researching my options, I came across this TBX mod which turns the 0-5 range into a typical tone control, and the 6-10 range into a bass cut.

First of all I used the .022uf cap that came with the TBX for the tone control because I find .047uf too dark to be usable. The diagram also calls for a 2200pf bass cut cap which results in a corner frequency of 72hz. I was afraid that the effect would be too subtle, so I went with a 1500pf cap instead. Lastly connected the modded TBX pot between the volume pot and output jack instead of between the switch and volume pot as suggested in the diagram. In practice it worked, but the 106hz corner frequency was still more subtle than I was hoping for. I've since learned that Reverend uses a 1000pf cap (with a 159hz corner frequency) so I'll be swapping to that value the next time I have the pickguard off.

99% sure you could mailorder...also, there's a dealer in Brussels. I'm fairly sure being a dealer involves making said order for a paying customer if they don't stock it.
