I play doom/stoner Metal and I'm looking for somthing different. I want something that will cut though the fuzzy distortion without getting too muddy but also not too thin. This is going in a guitar similar to a les paul (in terms of tonewood, scale, bridge and weight) tuned to C# standard. I've got my eye on railhammer Huevos 90 or alnico Grande with a nuevos neck. Any one with experience or thoughts?

I have the slightly lower output Nuevo 90s in one of my Reverends and couldn’t be happier - they sound just as described on the product page - tight lows, round highs - and to have *that* P90 tone combined with hum cancelling makes for an all around winner.

LMAO. Did they really call their pickup the "Balls 90"?

Sorry, I have nothing to contribute. :(

I looked at those, from what I can gather...the Huevos is just like the nuevos, only with more balls...as the name implies Haha

Alnico Grande is great in a Les Paul and while I wouldn't describe it as cutting, there's good focus to its fatness. If you want extra cut at sludgy gain, you might think about the ceramic-mag Chisel or Anvil. I have a Chisel and it's one of the few ceramic humbuckers I've been able to bond with. I think it would do very well at low pitch/high gain.

No specific advice or opinion to offer on the 90s except that I've come to expect good things from Joe. I'm a definite fan of P90 neck tone though- my first impulse would be to go full-hum bridge with a P90 neck.

That is another option I was looking at. Chisel with Nuevo neck. I was just hesitant go ceramic because I pulled Duncan distortions out because they could cut, but they were kinda all spice, no flavor.

Funny enough, I put the Nuevo 90s in to replace a Chisel/Anvil set that had come stock. Turned out I just wasn’t a ceramic pickup guy, and that set helped me realize it because they were so damned GOOD at what they did.

A chisel bridge/Huevos 90 neck would be a great combo - almost like a higher-gain version of the Reverend Double Agent (which I also have).

And, just in case it sounds like I’m an endorser, I’m NOT!!! Reverends/Railhammers are only part of my overall armory :)

Y'know, I think the Anvil might use the same coils as the AlnicoGrande. So if you bought the AG and it didn't cut well enough, swapping in a ceramic would give you an Anvil. Or something mighty close.

I never mag swapped any of my Railhammers (4 so far: Alnico Grande, a Chisel bridge and a HyperVintage set) but I imagine the undercarriage is like a regular humbucker so that shouldn't be difficult. I bet Joe would let you know whether there would be any unusual complications if you shot him an email.

Imho you should just ask for pickup advice for C# high gain pups...because thats what it all boils down to, some setups work some setups flop

Oh and mention what string gauge and what amp
