Rails pickup recommendation for old shred sound

Hello, Im piecing a cheap shredder guitar together and I need some help. Its a basswood body with maple/rosewood neck and a fixed bridge. Im going to put a Super Distortion in the bridge. The neck position is a single coil route so I was thinking of using a Hot/Cool Rails or maybe a Chopper. From what I can tell this guitar sounds dark/muddy so I need something with clarity. Im going for an Iron Maiden/Mercyful Fate sound. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

I would like the Cool Rails in the neck with a JB Jr in the bridge. It is the single coil equivalent to the shred-approved JB/Jazz combo.

Re: Rails pickup recommendation for old shred sound

I have an unused $8 PU from Amazon, 4 conductor Musiclilly or similar, so that decision was made for me. I think any high output Dimarzio would get the job done, and all of the demos I've heard were acceptable, honestly. The SD's are just as nice IMO, but I buy used and in this case would get whichever is cheaper. Carvin also plays ball in this field, and I think you might be equally happy with several options. Try it bypassing the cap, too, if you think your guitar is muddy, or playing with 500k/250k pots, or a resistor in line (if you need one pickup to see 500K and the other to see 250K). I'm no engineer but believe you can do this with two pickups/one pot.

If you're up for something outside of the rails/track sort of thing, look at the DiMarzio 'area' selection. Noiseless.

I agree but would also add the Hot Rails in the neck is a good option as well.

Re: Rails pickup recommendation for old shred sound

What are the differences between a Chopper and a Hot Rails?

Re: Rails pickup recommendation for old shred sound

If you want Iron Maiden lead tones, than the SD Hot Rails neck position, is what you're looking for. Instant Dave Murray tone.

Thats what I have on my Strats as well.

I was skeptical about these until I tried them, and I'm thoroughly impressed.

Re: Rails pickup recommendation for old shred sound

which ones did you try??
The tele that I recently converted to a semi-hollow has the set.

While they do mimic the true singlecoil sound pretty well, I'm not sure they fit the "shred" description. I haven't tried the strat variants or the hotter tele variant though, so i dunno.

They're not lying when they say "noiseless" though. The bridge pup literally doesn't have a ground wire. North and South only. I couldnt believe it.

Does anyone have experience with the Air Norton S? It seems like it might be a good match with the Super Distortion

Re: Rails pickup recommendation for old shred sound

Anyone with experience balancing out a Super Distortion in the bridge with a brighter, articulate rails pickup in the neck?

drop a line to DiMarzio after 12 noon EST. they are great about answering the phones. ask for tech support for a question about pickups. you'll probably get Eric. he can strap you down with some answers.

Id go with a dimarzio pro track. Pretty close to a neck paf - classic Dave Murray is superD/Paf.
