Rain Song Guitars...thoughts?

Re: Rain Song Guitars...thoughts?

My luthier friend set one up one time. He said it sounded like a cheap plastic guitar. But, I don't think he tried it electrically. Like an Ovation, it could be good for that. And, that was a long time ago. They may be better now.

Re: Rain Song Guitars...thoughts?

I've played serveral–one sounded terrible, one sounded really good and the others sounded pretty good. I think the Ovation comparison is fair (not comprehensive but fair.)

The appeal to me was durability and consistency regardless of humidty (or lack thereof.) I know of a guy in the West Texas desert who swears by his Rainsong.

I felt they were overpriced for the tone–would only truly consider buying one if I was living in the desert.

Or a great guitar for Hawaii.

I played one years ago. Played well, and well made, but tone was comparable to Ovation. Not giving up my Martins.

CA was another company that had carbon fiber guitars. I think Peavey acquired them.

Re: Rain Song Guitars...thoughts?

Carbon fibre wasn't resonant last i checked....sounds like a gimmick

Re: Rain Song Guitars...thoughts?

I've played several, and they sounded great. BTW, I use an Adamas SMT Carbon Fiber-topped acoustic, so I am already onboard with the technology. The plugged-in sound is also really great, and sounds the way I like an acoustic to sound (which I admit, is probably different than most people).

Re: Rain Song Guitars...thoughts?

+1 on several of the points above. They don't sound like a typical acoustic, but they generally sound pretty good and are very consistent.

Re: Rain Song Guitars...thoughts?

I have loved all the ones I’ve played... BUT I own an old Ovation and love it, too. :)

It's been years, but this seems to be my recollection too. Played really nice and no, doesn't sound like a Martin, it is different, but it sounds good and has a very immediate attack.

FWIW, I play a couple of Ovations too, an old USA Balladeer cutaway (same model Di Meola plays, but for some reason mine doesn't sound anything like his, probably primate error, or maybe because mine is red) and a nylon string.

Re: Rain Song Guitars...thoughts?

Good friend had one on trial a few years back. Played ok, sounded like a bad ovation. No depth, didnt sound like wood.

Haven't figured out their selling point.. Not low cost or great sound or great for performance.

It was all blue, so maybe aimed at color oriented?

Re: Rain Song Guitars...thoughts?

Unique tone bright and punchy different but to my ear nice accoustically, solid tones with the pickup through the system. Super stable guitars that will last a lifetime and never move due to humidity or temp is the number one advantage.

Know the history so here is the scoop. Was developed by a guy in Hawaii because of the humidity and what it did to conventional wood guitars. Concept was a super stable guitar that was not affected by temperature and humidity and needed constant maintenance. Had to perform in extreme conditions like high humidity in the desert in the rain without the need for constant adjustment but still play and sound nice. Think these were a home run as while unique in tone you can club a rowdy club patron over the head use one as a boat paddle then play a gig with these things the same night!!

A friend of mine in key West plays 7-10 gigs per week with his Composite Acoustics (peavey) guitar. It's bright and scooped but sounds good live and has held up pretty well to a serious level of use.

Re: Rain Song Guitars...thoughts?

IIRC, I played a used one at GC and liked it quite a bit. Id def like to own one. Having said that, Im more of an electric guy and not an accoustic connoisseur .
