I got a small tube amp today called a Randall RVC5. I could not find anything about it on the Randall website. At the store, I only tried it at low volume but it was enough to tell me that it could rock and that it had a biting sound. At guitar center it was only $200.
My first impression was that it does have a good distortion and that it was different from my Orange Jim Root. So here I will make comparisons. It's a bright amp without a full range. It doesnt get as deep as the Orange. Its not as loud as the Orange - but I think my Bugera V5 also has more headroom than this amp. However it works well with recordings and distorts at a comfortable bedroom level. What I noticed though is the tone is biting compared to my mushy spongy Orange.
I wish i had a chance to record it at cranked heavy metal levels. However I made a recording of other conditions in my soundfile below. Guitar is an Ibanez RG with Custom5 and dimarzio HS3. Sorry for my less than spectacular playing skills.
1. cranked volume, low gain, neck
2. cranked volume, low gain, bridge
3. cranked volume, mid gain, bridge
4. cranked volume, mid gain, neck
5. low volume, cranked gain, bridge
6. mid volume, mid gain, neck
