Randy Rhoads Tone Challenge

RR is the next on my list of tone-cloning, but I just haven't had the time to make a video yet (2.5 businesses plus my wife's).

Anyhoo - (regardless of what the naysayers claim) competition is always good because it forces you to work hard, sharpens your skills and sometimes you learn something new... just as long as people are cool.

So, I propose a Randy Rhoads tone challenge for anyone interested.

How close can you get?

Myself, I'll be focusing on the 1st album (Blizzard).

Now, maybe we won't have anyone participating, maybe we will... but I'm throwing it out there.

If you are participating, post below. If you already have something made, post below. And it would be great information for all to have if you explain how you got there.

Naturally, ISOs of the original guitar tone do not count.

Original backing instrument (drums bass etc) ISOs can be used as well as your own backing track.

There is no time constraint.

EDIT:

Here's some clips. Vid will come later.

Re: Randy Rhoads Tone Challenge

While I like Randy's playing, I really can't stand his tone. The closest I hear to something I like was the Mr Crowley picture disc, which has a live version of Mr. C & Suicide Solution, as well as You Said It All (unreleased album track). Good luck on your tone quest, though.

Re: Randy Rhoads Tone Challenge

I liked his tone on the Diary more so than Blizzard, because most of it was in Eb, but his live tone was even better in my opinion. While he did not have my fav guitar tone like Mincer said, Sabbath and early Ozzy are my favs, so I hold him in high regard. Never tried to get his tone personally, but I know others have tried and came pretty close.
I like your idea, and it should be very interesting to see what others submit to this challenge, as well as your own.

Re: Randy Rhoads Tone Challenge

I am very interested to hear the results but I am not even remotely qualified to attempt this!

Re: Randy Rhoads Tone Challenge

His live tone made me want to play guitar..,

The recorded tone on Blizzard is weak

Re: Randy Rhoads Tone Challenge

Sounds great!

I actually used some info in your VH 1 tone video just the other day

Re: Randy Rhoads Tone Challenge

The Goodbye to Romance tone is the closest one to Randy's in my opinion. Did you do anything different when tracking that clip?
All other things aside, youre playing them very well so thats awesome!

What pickups are you using?

Thanks - no, nothing different.

Pickups are '57 Classics (stock). In the vid I explain everything.
