rash of BOSS OD-1 pedals....?!

Re: rash of BOSS OD-1 pedals....?!

That's because the new hip setup is a non-master Marshall or a JCM 800 with some type of overdrice in front of it - TS-808, TS-9, BOSS OD-1, SD-1, blah blah blah. Never understood that myself.

Re: rash of BOSS OD-1 pedals....?!

I always wanted the original OD1 because it's the pedal Pete Townshend has used for extra solo gain since 1979/80 along with a Dyna Comp... but the prices of them are scary!!! I do own an early 80's Tokia Overdrive and from most reports i hear it's the same pedal as an OD1 so i guess i'm set...

mind ya with a guy like Pete Cornish looking after Pete i bet his OD1 has a few mods...

I wouldn't call that new...thats been a standard set up for over 25 years now...

Whats not to understand about it BTW??

FWIW, Pete's OD-1s are stock.

Also, FWIW there is a later, 8 pin op amp, MIJ OD-1 on TGP right now for $85

I just want to point out that this has NOTHING to do with me wanting a tube amp and a DS-1. :smack:

New hip setup? There isn't anything new about this!

Re: rash of BOSS OD-1 pedals....?!

I think he means how people are recently bucking the multi channel fx looped high gain amps and going back to goosing non MV marshalls with pedals again...

Re: rash of BOSS OD-1 pedals....?!

ok....soooo........"WHERE have these OD-1's been hiding, and why are they so plentiful suddenly/NOW?"

btw: townsend rocks!....and Angus, May, Page........yeah......i'm old......

Or it's just that with the state of the economy, people have decided these pedals aren't going to be going up in price much more than they are now. Once the pedal fad goes out of style for the 4th time they won't be worth as much. I have been watching the prices of used gear such as guitars and amps gradually drop over three years and fuzz or overdrive pedals just keep creeping up. This can't possibly keep happening for long.
I bet vintage rack gear and midi stuff will be the next huge gas.

Re: rash of BOSS OD-1 pedals....?!

dunno, but without a tone knob and the word "super," I'm not buying it.

Re: rash of BOSS OD-1 pedals....?!

The old boss overdrive is exactly the same circuit as the super overdrive. There is just a resistor instead of a pot for the tone circuit.
Any other difference is just probably the fact that it looks old so you get extra street cred and you can brag :"This is one of the original bosses from japan with the silver screw! They are so much better! The new ones are crap....." etc...

Not exactly correct. The original Boss OD-1 actually uses a 16-pin opamp in place of the standard 8-pin. Input buffers are opamp based, not BJT based. Opamp is a RC3403 as opposed to a JRC4558D or similar.

16-pin original version:

later 8-pin version:

Take a look at the input capacitor values leading into the OD circuit. .047uf on original, .0047uf on 2nd version. If the schematic is correct, there is a reversal of the order of the capacitor and resistor in the first gain stage. (4k7 / .047uf). Unsure how or if this would change the response of the gain stage.

I don't think this would be a night and day difference... but there's somethin'

Re: rash of BOSS OD-1 pedals....?!

You can stand in front of my Mk II Boogie and understand what I mean - I ain't need nothing to "goose it."

It's all different ways to do the same thing...

I for one, and this is nothing personal, woud never bother with a MK II Mesa.

I woud however run a goiod low gain pedal into an old Marshall...

Re: rash of BOSS OD-1 pedals....?!

I do both. There's so many ways to acheive good tone. I love seeing local cats who have just solid tone. Aren't trying to mimic anything too much and still sound good. And it doesn't matter how it gets done, just that it gets the job done. Last Saturday we rehearsed and I used a Hotcake into an AC30 clone and a PRS CU22. Rolled back the volume for cleans, I wasn't even near the pedal to switch it. So organic to take a step back and play that way. Sometimes i take gigs in small places just to run that kind of a setup instead of the rack. I do dig the gmajor 2 though and it has definitely made pedal dancing a thing of the past. Yeah it's digital but most asshats can't tell a damn difference live anyway!
