RAT pedal suggestions, please

There are so many of them: the RAT2, the Whiteface RAT, the You Dirty RAT, the Turbo RAT, the Fat RAT, the Solo.
I would love to have one and stack it with my TS9.
¿What are the main difference between these models?.

Re: RAT pedal suggestions, please

The differences are noticeable, but they all fundamentally sound like a RAT

Do you have the original ProCo rat? They're rather inexpensive, especially used. Just pick one up second hand, and see if you like it, before you commit to buying a more.... high-end RAT

If you know you like the RAT sound, I'd suggest the JHS modded RAT. Josh Scott is a ***king genius

Re: RAT pedal suggestions, please

If you want a Rat, just get a Rat2. Available, cheapish, classic. everything else is just more/bigger/fatter/whatever - except the Solo. Solo is not Classic Rat (But it is my favorite!)

There is a great Rat thread here somewhere...

Re: RAT pedal suggestions, please

The originals had an LM308 opamp, the new imported Rat 2s have an OP07, but it's a subtle difference. I agree with Ace, grab a used one and see if the Rat is for you.

Re: RAT pedal suggestions, please

Remember that the tone control works backwards in a vintage Rat - the only Rats I've owned. When you turn the tone control down you get MORE TREBLE, not less.

I played Rats because Jeff Beck did and I liked how I could use my Strat and turn the guitar's volume down and clean up the sound for rhythm.

Then Beck switched to a Klon and I started exploring Klon Klones. I liked that sound better and eventually bought a Klon KTR. Made by Bill Finnigan, the designer of the Klon and exactly the same circuit in a more affordable pedal.

These days I have a Klon KTR and a Hermida Dover Drive for Eric Johnson violin sounds on my pedal board.

Re: RAT pedal suggestions, please

Search isn't working for me. Can someone find that big Rat thread?

Re: RAT pedal suggestions, please

Mosky Black Rat, has the LM308 in it .../thread.
They are outstanding and im a tone snob.

They cost like less than $30 bucks.
Have you priced Pro Co stuff ? Outrageous.

Even re-issue crappy Pro Co pedals are in the $100's.

Looks like there is also a Turbo switch on that too.

Again, Mosky, Mooer, Donner....all very, if not extremely similar, or even exactly the same.

Really? IME they're usually <$100 brand new, and there are TONS available used / for cheap

After recently getting a Mosky Golden Horse, I'm definitely down to try their RAT clone. Thanks for the tip!

I bought a Pro Co Rat re-issue 10 years ago. Could not stand it. It did not have a LM308 chip & the filter knob was useless.
The Mosky is totally kick-butt. I use it all the time.

Not a fan of Behringer but Mosky yes. I also have a Mosky buffer & Dyna-comp.

Yeah I have a eno myomorpha, and it has the vint/turbo switch and allegedly the lm308 chip. same as the mosky and the mooer etc...A/B'd it with my old RAT2 from the late 80s/early 90s...sounds like a rat to me, and it was like $25!

Re: RAT pedal suggestions, please

Pity RadioShack went under. They used to sell a distortion pedal kit that was very similar to the Rat.

Re: RAT pedal suggestions, please

I had a real Rat (Original 80's) on my board for a year when Hollywood started. I'd never pay the big bugs for an original vs my Mooer. I'd say the bass in the Mooer etc. Could be a touch looser. But jammed through a semi-raging Marshal - meh. $25 and move on.

My Solo is a way different beast though. That thing can do all the Rat tricks and whole lot more. It's like a totally evolved walking/talking post-apocalypse Rat not to be effed with!

Re: RAT pedal suggestions, please

is the solo a rare beast? i never see em in the wild

Re: RAT pedal suggestions, please

Ace had it right: Rat2 is the Rat most people mean when they talk about a Rat.

As to the opamp nonsense: the Rat2 had an LM308 through the...mid 90s maybe? I forget exactly where the switchover happened. You can still find plenty of LM308 Rat2s out there, but they'll cost you ~3X as much as the newer ones. FWIW, I bought both and A/B'd them: at identical settings, one was a little more aggressive than the other. If I nudged the knobs a teensy bit, I couldn't pick out the LM308 in a blind test.

So save your money and get an imported one.

Re: RAT pedal suggestions, please

RAt 2 $70 from Sweetwater. Just go buy it.

But...for less money any close mini will do.
