Re-doing the top on my LP

Have been wanting to this for quite a while and since I've kind of had some free time lately I figured it was time.

It's an '05 Standard Faded that was honey burst up until last week. A fair amount of sanding and steaming out of a few scars and some more sanding and I was pretty happy with the top. It took the Trans-tint lemon yellow dye pretty well. I cut the dye with denatured alcohol, did 2 coats with a light sanding in between. Shot it with a coat of StewMac sanding sealer, I'll lightly sand and shoot a coat again tomorrow. once I see it with a few coats of sealer I'll decide whether to go with a gloss lacquer topcoat or just buff out the sealer like the original finish was.

I also ordered up some Cream Tone plastics to doll it up a bit.

That looks amazing. I wish I was brave enough to do that.

It’s mostly patience, finally starting to develop some so I am putting it to use lol

Re: Re-doing the top on my LP

looks good man! sure would look pretty with a gloss coat

Re: Re-doing the top on my LP

Second seal coat on, really doubt I’ll be going gloss but we’ll see

Re: Re-doing the top on my LP

That looks great. With my LP Jr DC build I will probably be going the Faded look as well. The body color is going to be olive drab green but the neck will be natural with a black headstock face. I was thinking of using grain filler on it but I'll see once I get a chance to inspect the body and neck that arrived today from Precision Guitar Kits.

Re: Re-doing the top on my LP

really like the color. is that actually what it looks like?

Oh man, that is so cool! Nice work on a gorgeous LP. Can't wait to see it when it is finished! I'm always a sucker for sexy singlecuts. Not so cheap thrills...

Re: Re-doing the top on my LP

I love the satin finish there. But overall, I like satin finishes better, anyway.

Re: Re-doing the top on my LP

It makes me want to re-do the faded dye of one of my favorite guitars, a Brian Moore. The blue quilted top faded to a milky purple, and it just doesn't look great. I don't think I could do it myself, but I'd love to have it done someday with a satin finish.

Re: Re-doing the top on my LP

I wouldn't just leave it in sanding sealer...it won't resist wear (it's "sanding sealer" because it sands easily). You'll be refinishing it again in no time. If you like that finish/sheen I'd just use a couple coats of satin lacquer...much more durable.

I am well aware, I fully expect it to age and wear fairly quickly.

Appreciate the input though.
