Re-wiring a cab

So that recto vs. 1960A thread got me thinking about re-wiring my Mesa cab with some heavier gauge wire. I got some 16 gauge layin around here, ya'll reckon that'd be enough, or should I just go out and buy some 12 gauge for it?

Re: Re-wiring a cab

i'm going to be that guy that doesn't add any useful info to the thread. but i've also been thinking about doing this to my 1960A for a while now, along with the interior foam, just kinda to see what happens.

worth it or not?

Re: Re-wiring a cab

I got my mesa cab all opened up already, just had to replace a couple of the screws in there that were holdin in my speakers. I had some ungodly rattling goin on inside the cab, think I solved the problem though. Stripped threads=weaksauce.

Would just be a matter of changin out some wire for me ;).

Re: Re-wiring a cab

the bigger gage wire the better-
I'd think twice before putting foam in your cab, you will reduce the volume of it, and probably have less lows.

Re: Re-wiring a cab

Just picked up about 8 feet of 12 gauge wire, gonna re-do the wiring inside my Mesa and report back. If I like it well enough, I may re-do the wiring in my 2X10 as well.

Re: Re-wiring a cab

Well, I just finished re-wiring the cab. Not gonna be able to do a real test until tomorrow morning, as my studio is ajacent to my parents bedroom and they're sleepin at the moment.

While I was at it i swapped the speakers from a "governors on top, man-o-wars on bottom" configuration to an X configuration, and fixed a loose screw in there that was causing some unholy rattling.

Did play clean a bit, and here's my first impressions:

It seems to be much cleaner and clearer now, though I'm not sure if thats directly due to the change in speaker wire or any of my other "fixes". Ever since I put those eminence speakers in the cab has not performed very well on the clean channel (though its been ungodly when KRANKin). So far, so good. So what? I'll test it out more tomorrow morning.

Re: Re-wiring a cab

Well, what ever it was, it seems to have resolved itself. Now its rockin out pretty hardcore.

First impressions: This little mod does seem to have extended the high and low range a bit...now I have to keep my presence control at around 1 to 3 to tame the high-end on this beast.

And as if the KRANK didn't already have enough earth-shattering lows, my cats have been freaking out like all hell since I started playin. Its like a freakin earthquake.

Its a subtle difference, kinda like putting a sonic maximizer on the cab. I can't wait to get this thing to band pratice and unleash the beast ;).

Re: Re-wiring a cab

Total time spent re-wiring the cab: About 45 minutes. Total investment: about $7.50. Got 8 feet of 12 gauge speaker wire from home depot, still got plenty left to re-do my 2x10. Like I said, its a subtle change, but IMO worth the time and money.

Re: Re-wiring a cab

Back when the speakers were stock, it was hard-wired. I do the same whenever I'm wiring up a cab. Not that I have any real reason behind it. At least I know the speaker cable will never come off ;).
