Really Unusual Telecaster

happy raisin

I saw the weirdest telecaster the other day when I went to Sam Ash with my friend when he went to pick up his Dave Mustaine V. It had a quilt maple top, two gold covered humbuckers with a single coil in the middle, a floyd rose, an ebony fretboard, and gold hardware. As atypical of a telecaster as this sounds, what really suprised me was that it had a set neck. What kind of telecaster is this, and when did fender make it?

Re: Really Unusual Telecaster

It's an abomination of a Telecaster and Fender started making it as soon as they lost their damn minds. :p

Re: Really Unusual Telecaster

Nah, they made'em. I don't know a lot about them but I think they were called the HM series, or something? I'm pretty sure Squire made them in Korea and there was a Mexican series as well. My memory's a bit shoddy though.

A couple of guys here have them and project versions of them. I'm sure someone will pop in with all the information you're looking for. Alternatively take a look at the Telecaster thread...

EDIT: Are you sure it was a Fender? I know Charvel and (I think) Jackson make very similar looking guitars...

Oh ok thanks. I'm definitely sure it was a Fender, because I looked at the headstock a billion times in case I was hallucinating. If it helps, it's price was about $2000.

Re: Really Unusual Telecaster

Probably another one of Fender's short-run, luxury model Telecaster derivatives. IMO, the Telecaster is a simple but effective tool for making music. The luxury trimmings seem superfluous.

I bet if you called the Sam Ash that you were at, they'd know.

Yeah. I haven't played too many telecasters but they all seemed awesome in just their most basic form

Re: Really Unusual Telecaster

It looks great. I don't like middle pickups but unlike charvels they have recessed FR so it is better for me. I would love to give that a spin.

Re: Really Unusual Telecaster

It sounds like something from the set neck series which were made from 1987-1994 I think. The most common version was a two humbucker set neck tele this model was used by Izzy Strandlin of Gn'R and Black Francis of the Pixies in the late 80's both of whom were used in Fender ad's. The later HM series did feature fancy tops and Floyds but was a bit of a dead end for Fender as by the time they came out grunge had taken off and people wanted Mustangs, Jags and Jazzmasters.

Re: Really Unusual Telecaster

Can't say I've ever run across one w/those specific specs...

- quilt maple top
- two gold covered humbuckers with a single coil in the middle
- floyd rose
- ebony fretboard
- gold hardware

and it had "Fender" Logo, Neck Plate, etc? Be interested in a picture of that one.

Seriously people..."Tele/Telecaster" is a name associated w/a particular body shape.

I think that over the years Fender themselves have easily shown the "variety" of options that can be used on that body shape to include Humbuckers, Tremolos of all varieties, Neck Thru, Set Neck, etc...regardless of "personal opinion"...TRULY...THEY ARE ALL TELES!

Otherwise...Macawber is not a Tele (Neck HB), Andy Summers didn't play a Tele (Various Mods), Jimi Page didn't play a Tele (Custom Paint)....this is not at stab at all the "Tele Purists"...but damn...we all have an opinion, right?

Fender CS made them from 1991-92.
