Recent set-up at GC...

Okay I finally gave in to getting a setup on my gibson les paul studio plus...

What a terrible mistake...
:thumbsdow

The guy shredded the frets down for no reason...
And even then, the guitar buzzes... The neck is straight as an arrow now, however, the A string buzzes like hell...
And when I strum really hard, the damn pickups fart... is that because of the string buzz? or is that another problem...

I'm so upset :thumbsdow :thumbsdow :thumbsdow :thumbsdow

Oh yeah... is there anything I can do about it??? like the problem with the pickups? The only thing I can do is make the pickups as far away from the strings as possible... but that takes away from the sound I like...

Re: Recent set-up at GC...

Bummer.

This just proves that not all techs are created equally and that GC service, even when it's not "their" service really bites most of the time.

Why did the guy do fret work if the frets were ok?

If the E & D strings are cool the A-string buzz might be because he filed the saddle or bent the bridge or something really wonky. It might also be a bad string...but maybe not.

I don't know about the pickup stuff...I'd have to have it in my hands to diagnose that.

But honestly man, you've got a great case for going back to the store and having the guy redo it, or better yet...talk to the store manager and tell & show him how their "tech" got your Paul into this FUBAR state and ask him what he's gonna' do to correct the problem.

Personally, I'd try and avoid having the GC tech re-do the work and see if GC will refund your dough or pay to have it redone by the tech of your choice. If the guitars frets are shot & need to be re-crowned & leveled leaving you with 'nill for material and it needs to be refretted you might be able to take 'em to small claims court to recover the cost of having it refretted.

If the manager won't work with you, rise holy hell about it and tell EVERYONE.

Make a HUGE scene in the store.

Tell all your friends!

Take an ad out in the NY Times!

LOL

Sorry man, that sucks to hear about. I just had a tech semi-butcher the wiring of my PRS and I need to find a new guy to do it. The set-up is ok, but I still feel like I burned $85 on it.

Re: Recent set-up at GC...

Ugh it's pretty bad... I'm very pissed... gahh

Do pickups fart out like that when strings buzz?

Re: Recent set-up at GC...

like... on a clean channel... when I strum the strings a little hard, the sound becomes distorted and kind of "farts out"... like it gets disgustingly fuzzy...? does that help?

Re: Recent set-up at GC...

most gtr ctr ppl shouldn't be allowed around musical instruments.

Re: Recent set-up at GC...

I can't believe you took that to GC. Did they offer you the fries with that?

Can you image the circle of dubbs in that back room trying to figure out how to setup a guitar. Oh boy.

There is some great stuff online about setups. If you need a professional to look at it, take it to a mom and pop.

Take it to someone good. Spend a little of your money bro. ;)

Re: Recent set-up at GC...

Most GC's outsource the work to a local shop. Problem is, they're usually the cheapest place in town.

The only part of a guitar's setup I don't do (yes) is the fretwork. I'm starting to do some nut work myself. There is one local guy I trust to do good work though. He did fret work on my Kramer and I couldn't be happier. It plays like butta!!

Sorry to had to experience this. Get them to take care of it and then don't go back.

Are the pickups and/or polepieces too close and/or touching the strings?

That's the only thing I can think of really...beyond that it totally needs to be in-hand to diagnose stuff like this and find the real cause of the problems.

SeaFoamer nailed it...really man...you might BUY a guitar at Guitarget but never ever, EVER get anything "serviced" there!

Actually, I never leave anything with a shop that's going to send it out to a 3rd party. Hopefully the reasons are obvious.

Your a NJ guy...if you need names of solid techs drop a line by email or pick up the phone, I'd be more then happy to steer you towards someone who isn't an idjit and can make it "right".

That sure is miserable luck.

The moral of the story is if you want a job doing properly, do it yourself. Most aspects of guitar setup are user-tweakable, and you just never know what some self-appointed techie's going to do to your beloved axe. If some cretin filed away the frets on one of my guitars I would be exceedingly p!ssed!

Re: Recent set-up at GC...

I'd go back and show the manager what the Tech did. Get him to 'play it' and if the m anager cant play it say ' well then why the FCKUCK are you working in a guitar store??'

Re: Recent set-up at GC...

I got my guitar setup once by GC back when i first started playing. had an ibanez, got a sh-6 installed and setup to play 10-46. the guy actually did a good job though, that was a GC in arlington Tx. Too bad it cost me $120 though! I do everything myself now, best setup i did was last fall on my jackson. Thing played PERFECT. I doubt ill ever take a guitar to someone unless there is some actual work to be done.

Re: Recent set-up at GC...

Do a search on the net for "setting guitar neck relief" and then "setting guitar bridge height".

Visually check to see that your strings aren't hitting the pickups.

You could simply start by raising the A string side of the bridge, or lowering the A string side of the pickups.

Good luck.

Re: Recent set-up at GC...

GC ****ing up my Flying V about 15 years ago is the whole reason I´m a luthier... wanted a setup, got a totally ****ed up REFRET with warwick brass wire (LOL?) where he even caused finish damage to the instrument, esp the back of the neck....ended up paying nothing in cash and the guitar is worth a few hundred less...

I can´t say it often enough: Just say no to GC... there´s nothing they can do for you that someone else can´t do better and just as cheap.

Dang...
Does receiving a refret kill the instrument?

Does changing tires on your car kill the vecihle?

Nope, not if done correctly ;)

So it doesn't affect the quality of the instrument at all?

Not that i know, atleast.

People who play their guitar alot often get their frets replaced every three to five years. :)
