Recommend a good overdrive pedal

Re: Recommend a good overdrive pedal

Should mention Im looking to add some nice mid range punch to what will probably be a pretty dark sounding Blackstar amp.

Re: Recommend a good overdrive pedal

Only thing that comes into mind at that prioce point is either a Boss SD-1 or a Digitech Bad Monkey.

Re: Recommend a good overdrive pedal

If you can find one of the cool cats used (CTO-1) it would be a great choice.

Re: Recommend a good overdrive pedal

The DigiTech HardWire CM-2 Tube Overdrive could probably be had for that. How does it stack up to a boss sd-1 or bad monkey?

I was looking at some clips on the BM and it seems to my ears to take out high freq as compared to a few others with the tone controls at about half.

The HardWire CM-2 actually works great with Blackstar amps! I shouldn't have sold mine... So I would say the CM-2 or an Ibanez TS9.

Re: Recommend a good overdrive pedal

That hardwire tubescreamer is vastly underrated. I found it just as musical and useful as any of the booteek TS types Ive tried that cost a bunch more.

FWIW i have a badmonkey too and while its a good deal the HW craps all over it for pure tone. First thing I did when I got the HW was a/b them.

Re: Recommend a good overdrive pedal

$50 isn't a lot to work with I would say find a used Marshall Guvnor or Bluesbreaker, used Boss Blues Driver, Boss SD1, used Ibanez TS9, etc.

Re: Recommend a good overdrive pedal

MXR Classic OD, wire in the switch for another $3 and you've got the ZW too. Do that, or get a used TS9.

Re: Recommend a good overdrive pedal

Danelectro transparent overdrive V1 go for 50 bucks on tgp all the time, pick one up

Re: Recommend a good overdrive pedal

MXR Classic OD,

Yeah, if these are still available, I'd recommend getting one. I replaced mine with a Fulltone Fulldrive 2, but I'm hanging on to the MXR because it works so well and cost so little, it doesn't make sense to get rid of it.

Re: Recommend a good overdrive pedal

If you're going to be using it on the o/d channel I would suggest you consider an EQ pedal. Boss GE7 or similar can add a terrific amount of boost and allow you to shape the EQ to your taste far more than a o/d pedal.

Re: Recommend a good overdrive pedal

Looks like i'm getting a DigiTech HardWire CM-2. I had to go slightly over my 50 dollar budget to pick up a used one off the bay. Looking at some clips, those things look like they smoke all on their lonesome.

Sweet! That pedal matched very well with both of my Blackstars (HT-40 and HT-5).

Re: Recommend a good overdrive pedal

The Hardwire CM-2 is a fantastic OD, especially with the Blackstars. I'm sure you are going to love it! :)

Re: Recommend a good overdrive pedal

Does GC still sell those "mxr classic overdrives" ie. the GTOD with a different paintjob and a 30 buck pricepoint? Those are nothing short of excellent.
