recommend a PuP to replace the JB bridge in my Gibson LP.

I've got a Jazz neck and want to replace the JBJ in my Gibson Lester. The JB is a bit too thin with the 500k pots.

What other bridge pups do you recommend to pair with the Jazz neck?

Peace.

Thin? Hmmm.... That's not the usual description of a JB so I'd first try moving it a little closer to the strings.

But the Distortion is a JB with a ceramic magnet instead of the alnico 5 used in the JB. The result is a pickup with more mids (= thicker tone) .

You might also like the Custom...it's also a ceramic magnet pickup and sounds great in most Les Pauls.

Custom Custom. Alnico 2 mag, sweet buttery high, pronounced mids, nice lows. Matches well with the Jazz.

I like the Custom 5 in my LP.

I was going to suggest the custom custom, but Lew's absolutely right. Play around with that JB a little. You may get it to sound more to your liking.

Thanks! Since he had mentioned the JB having a "thin" tone, I was thinking of a humbucker with strong mids and strong bass. The only thing with the Custom Custom is: if I compare it to an alnico 5 pickup like the Custom 5 or JB, the Custom Custom doesn't have quite as much bass. It does have alot thicker mids and more pronounced mids though. I love the CC in my semi hollowbody Monoco Super Pro...in that guitar it has an outragously great tone! Lew

I've tried adjusting the PuP closer and further from the strings, and to be honest it isn't really making much of a difference; it's tone really is "thin." I know that this can't be the why the JB is so popular among SD users, but maybe it's because this PuP is from the early 80's; It's a JBJ. It used to feedback quite easily, so I re-waxed it and it cleaned up, but there is something missing. I've often thought that the JB is the PuP that would suit my needs, and it has for the past 5 months.

Maybe I should sell this one and buy a brand new one? Maybe a new one would be more reliable?

This specific PuP is confusing me.

I was thinking bout a JB, but in all the clips I hear it seems to be lacking something...liek it was missing some "balls" in the sound, is this what your saying?
Because if it's like this in a LP...I'tll be thinner in a strat!

I'd describe it as sounding like a jet. As though it's a high speed rocket flying through the air. I hope that description makes sense. In comparison, I'd say that a C5 reminds me of a muscle car.

I know it isn't out of phase. I think it may be because it is a 20 year old PuP. maybe I'll sell it and buy a newer/used one and compare the two.

I have one that sounds thin and it's because one of the coils is shot. You may want to check the resistance with a DMM to make sure that both coils are working. You should get around 8k or a little higher on each one. That could be the problem.

thanks Erik. I never thought of that. I will try this option first. I suppose that if one of the coils is dead, than the PuP cannot be fixed?

Peace.

It can be if you know how or you can send it to MJ at the Custom Shop and she can fix it. I tried fixing mine but it didn't work and I just can't justify sending it in to fix it when a new one costs the same amount. Oh well. I salvaged it for the magnet and mounting plate at least if I ever want to try and wind my own at some time.

I couldn't say no to a Custom. It sounds more like a PAF (overdriven) than it's A5 or A2 counterparts, and matches nicely with the Jazz.

I wouldn't say that the JB is thin in a LP, but it is very one dimesional, compared to say, a Custom, Custom 5, or even a Pearly Gates or a Seth Lover. If you want more lows and more of what I think of as "Les Paul Bark" from the bridge position under gain, the Custom 5 and Custom do it very well.
