Recommend me a 1-trick heavy pony guitar?

I'm looking for a cheap guitar for heavy stuff. I have a couple "serious" guitars but I'd really like to have a "joke" guitar to pull out for heavy stuff. I play in a band that does some 60's - 70's cover tunes, or at least our versions of them. Using the basic song structure as a base, I'll either "crunch it up" or just solo all over a song.

For the songs that I "crunch up" I'd love to have an over-the-top, wild guitar for the heavier songs. No Strat-like guitars, LP-like guitars, or anything common. I was thinking something like a Flying-V, BC Rich or maybe even a baritone guitar (although I have no experience with baritone's.)

Any recommendations? My budget for this "joke" guitar is roughly $300. No used or eBay recommendations please. I don't like buying guitars on eBay so I'd probably just walk into the local Guitar Center with about $300 and play anything that fits the bill. That way too if it's an el-cheapo, made in Zimbabwe guitar at least I can play 'em all and find the best of the bunch. Thanks!

damn shame, the best deals you find on ebay. Nicest guitars too, especially the weird and unusual stuff. Things you wouldn't find anywhere else.

With that said, Combine $300 and Guitar Center I highly doubt you're going to find anything.

Concurr.

With that said, look for 80's Hamer superstrat designs.

Some had 27 frets.

C'mon! 27 frets! :burnout:

A jackson kelly or warrior XT are both crazy looking, you may be able to get one of them used for a good price.
If your budget was alot higher I would say a Gibson moderne is right up your alley.

You call that wild? Think crazy! Think "extreme" dude! I have plenty of Start lookalikes. I need something that the screams "wild and heavy."

Again, I refuse to buy anything like a guitar on eBay. There's just too much that can go wrong. And when I say "Guitar Center" I basically mean any retail store in my area. I have several to choose from so there's a decent selection. And used guitars are still an option, as long as I can find one in my area.

And $300 should be a decent budget for a joke guitar. I get Guitar Center ads in the mail all the time that have $150 Epiphones, $199 BC Rich's, and even an occasional $99 Ibanez. As for quality electronics and stuff, I'm not opposed to spening more $ to mod it later if I like it. I just need a basic, wild, el-cheapo guitar.

I really like the Daisy Rock idea. I forgot about them. It'd be great to start playing some killer, crunch licks with a pink, flower-shaped guitar. :laugh2:

My uncle has an Epiphone Moderne that he found in a local shop. Another good idea but not wild enough. It was kind of light and minimalist. Not nearly tasteless enough.

What did you think of the other guitars I had links to or told you about? Were they tasteless enough? What about the Kramer Gorky Park?

I just saw this one on Ed Romans site,

+1 one for the B.C Rich body arts. Those are not bad for the money and should be wild enough.

Good options although the Kramer looks like it may be a little difficulat to find locally.

I just did a quick search on Musician's Friend and came up with a few possibilities. Anyone have any opinions on them? Any other options?

B.C. Rich Warlock. Not bad looking. A solid choice probably.

Daisy Rock Could be fun. I'd have to play it to know for sure.

Dean VX I don't want black and I'm not too keen on sunbursts but may be worth looking into.

Ibanez Iceman Not sure if this is wild enough.

Epiphone V This is actually $50 over my limit but it looks like a nice, solid choice. And it comes in white which will be noticeable on a dark stage.

Re: Recommend me a 1-trick heavy pony guitar?

your considerations look nice, I would say look into some more BC Rich and Jacksons (warriors and what not) They should have some of that stuff at your guitar center in your price range.
Rock On:smoker:

Re: Recommend me a 1-trick heavy pony guitar?

if you're going for a rich you should consider something else than the warlock(too many people know and own it).Maybe go for a beast or an ironbird

Re: Recommend me a 1-trick heavy pony guitar?

Maybe one of those acrylic Warlocks or Mockingbirds? I forget how much they are.

Re: Recommend me a 1-trick heavy pony guitar?

im partial to the iceman, but thats just me. (my friend has one, it plays kinda nice too)
