Recommend Me A Cheap Recording Interface

I'm looking for a cheap interface to do demo stuff with. Just to get ideas down/record demos so my vocalist can write lyrics and stuff to the music. I'm willing to spend a bit, but not too much. Maybe $100-250? I'm open to used stuff too.

Focusrite Scarlett or something like that? It seems very easy to use, just plug and play. And it comes with a preamp too. Under 300 bucks. Go to Focusrite.com. Just don't buy Behringer.

I have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. two-channel USB 2.0 interface, 1/4" & XLR inputs selectable for line or instrument level, standard TRS monitor outputs, headphone outputs, phantom power, and the best part is that it's got the same high quality Focusrite preamps that they use in their high-end Red rackmount preamps/interfaces.

Only cost me $150 canadian. Might be a bit cheaper in the US.

I've got an M-Audio Fast Track MKII that I'd be willing to part with if you're interested. I was just about to post in the Trading Post later tonight. I just upgraded to a Focusrite Saffire 6 and the recorded tones don't seem all that different between them. The Fast Track is great if all you need to record is one or two instruments. Both do pretty much the same thing, but the Focusrite has a few more features.

An another vote for the Focusrite 2i2. Nice and flexible little unit, with a little skill / practice you can make nice demos.

For the info, other rackmount interfaces = valid, Red = fail. All the built-in mic pres in Focusrite interfaces are distant relatives to their old "green" series that are really nice and well designed but still budget mic preamps. Focusrite "Red" series preamps are non-compromising high end. You can't find anything close like that in their (really nice, I must add) consumer audio interfaces.

If there is even the faintest possibility that you might eventually wish to record an acoustic drum kit, two input channels will not be enough. I suggest a pre-owned Mark Of The Unicorn Ultralite mk3.

I use the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 as well, great little unit. As always, it's tempting to go for more I/O options "just in case", but it's more $ and in the end I'm glad I didn't bother, it's not like i ever use more than 2 inputs at once doing recordings by myself.
