Recommend me a good practice amp

Now I have a Marshall MG15RCD (model from 2001) that has good cleans but distortion is very bad (has a strange metallic sound and screechy highs). I currently use a Guvnor 2 pedal for distortion and amp only for cleans.

I've seen good reviews of the new MG15DFX, like mine but a new edition with supposed better sound (more like a tube amp) and 4 digital effects (delay, chorus, flanger, reverb). Though, I've not tried it yet.

Anybody have this amp (or the new MG15CDR)? Is the sound really improved on the new models?

Roland Cube 15 or Cube 30 is where my $$$ would go if I were looking for a practice amp.

Roland cube 30...i think its actually a fair bit better than the cube 15 if you can afford the difference, and well worth it. Great practice amp with great practice cleans and distortions...really great!

I had the CDR model and I thought it had very nice tone on clean and distortion. The dampening effect they use to simulate tube response was pretty good. My only complaint with the unit was that it hissed quite a bit on overdrive when you dialed above 5 or 6. :smoker:

I am goping to suggest the Vox Valvetronix AD15VT- its a modelling amp and has the KORG REMS circuitry built in and should be more than adequate for what you want. It will do all the cleans and also the different overdrives and I think not very expensive. I am not sure if you can get them where you are but check them out.

I just got a Roland Cube 30 a couple weeks ago and it sounds awesome. I highly recommend it!

Seeng as both amps you talk about are from the MG series, i would expect little difference in sound, and i have only heard very good things about the cube 30, so i would go for a trial on that. This sounds like a good excuse to go down the local guitar shop and try a few out, no-one here knows exactly what sound you want except yourself.

Thanks guys. I'll have to ask for the cubes but in the shop I only saw Marshall, Fender and Peavey amps.

I bought a Roland Cube 30 recently and it's a really excellent little amp.

Clean channel is modelled on a Roland JC120. Crystal clear!

Dirty channel has 8 models - Acoustic (probably its least good feature), Black Panel (Fender Twin), Brit Combo (Vox AC30 TB), Tweed (Fender Bassman), Classic Stack (Marshall Plexi - this is my personal fave!), Metal Stack (Peavey 5150), R-Fier (Mesa Rectifier). They may not sound exactly like the real things, but for a £155 practice amp you get a heck of a lot of great-sounding different tones in a highly portable box (10" speaker).

Digital FX - Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo, Reverb, Delay.

Aux in, Headphone/Recording out, footswitchable channels.

And I reckon it's loud enough for small gigs too.

It's a great little amp.
