I'm going to be running a Classic Stack Plus in the neck, and I think a Pegasus in the bridge. I'll be playing everything from Dire Straits and Pink Floyd to Gojira and Tremonti on this guitar. The wiring is very customized to me; the middle pickup will only be used together with the neck pickup, both in parallel and in series. I am going to split the neck pickup when I mix them, so that a normal noisy RWRP middle pickup works.
The series sound is what I'm especially worried about. I'm trying to imitate a neck humbucker. Let's set the goalposts as the intro to Sweet Child O Mine. In one guitar I have 2 classic stacks in series and the sound is way too dark. No great hollow sound and no sparkle. But in a different guitar I have 2 cheap noisy single coils in series and it sounds great. I know it's possible to get close enough to the sound I want with 2 single coils in series.
So, what middle pickup should I use? Scooped strat? Vintage flat? Custom flat? Psychedelic?
