Recommend me a neck P/U to replace a Jazz

After having the JB/Jazz set in my Iceman for 2 years, and after messing with pup heights and really trying to get to like it, it's time for an extraction. Not rich enough in this guitar, just kinda flat and tame. So I want something that is richer, especially for lead work, more bluesy but likes gain as well and will mix well with the JB. I have them wire up to be split, so a pup that splits well is a plus. I use this guitar for metal and classic rock, but I would like to get some better blues tones out of it, and the jazz is just lacking there for a neck pup.

I've never tried the Distortion neck but a lot of guys seem to like it with a hot bridge pickup like the JB. The Distortion bridge model is a JB with a ceramic magnet. So it seems like they might sound good together.

My favorite Duncan neck pickup remains the Pearly Gates neck. I've used it a lot with the Duncan Custom. I like it because it doesn't get woofy when I want a clean chord sound - like in a slow blues where you comp with your guitar down to 6 or so for a nice clean chord tone. Then when you go for a solo you crank it up to 10 and get a great soloing tone. That's what I use the PGN for. It also sounds very good split into a single coil for Tele neck pickup type tone.

My Hamer came with the Jazz neck/JB bridge combo. I liked the sparkle of the Jazz in that guitar.

Are you using 500K pots and a .02 tone cap? That's what my Hamer had and the tone control was connected to the output jack of the guitar - same effect as the 50's mod: keeps things clearer and brighter.

The 59n would give you more of what you are looking for, I think, but...what Lew describes about the PGn, well, I think that I would try that. I love the 59n for solos, but it can, at times, be a bit too much in the bass/woof department for chord work.

I've used the Jazz neck, so I understand your point of reference.

I dig mixing the APHn with the JB for a good all around high gain lead guitar that has a beautiful clean neck tone. Thhe APHn is warm and thick, but still has a nice, complex sparkle to the treble when played clean.

I was thinking the PG neck. I have the A2P neck in my Warmoth. Maybe I should try it in the Ibanez and see how I like it. How are the A2Pn and PGn different? If I like the A2P in the Ibanez, I could always get the PGn for the Warmoth, which has a PG in the bridge. It's a win-win!

The PGN has more snarl in the high mids, a bit brasher pick attack, and has less delicate highs than the APHn. Overall, it's a brighter, more aggressive tone. My fave in a LP style is the PGn, in a doublecut, I,ll take an APHn

It might sound strange but a JB in the neck spot sounds very nice....

I have wondered about the JBn, I'll have to think on this some more before I make a choice..........Probably going to go for the PGn and go from there.
