Recommend me a small amp

I no longer have an amp at home, I usually just plug it into my computer but I'd like something so I don't have to always set up my DAW and whatnot. I had an Uberschall among other things, but I don't need anything that huge anymore. I play a lot of metal, progressive death mostly like Opeth or BTBAM. I also play modern metal (Parkway Drive, Black Dahlia Murder, etc), some hardcore stuff and some folky prog stuff (newer Opeth or Borknagar). I'd like a solid clean at least, I have an Amptweaker Tight Metal that works beyond wonders for any type of distortion, so onboard distortion is not as important. My main guitar is an 8 string in F standard, but I'm purchasing a new 6 here soon. I know Opeth uses Laneys but I've honestly never had any experience with a Laney. Suggestions?

Re: Recommend me a small amp

I'm currently surfing random sites and a few ones I've found. . . Laney Ironheart combo or Lionheart combo. Laney VC30. Blackstar HT series. And I'm still looking.

Re: Recommend me a small amp

I can't stand the tone of the Terrors for some reason. Trans is alright but the combo is a bit pricey. I'm sort of considering one of the H&K series too, the meister ones.

Try out the smaller amps in Laney's Ironheart range. I haven't personally tried one, but from what I hear, they have good cleans, and are very capable of a metal tone. Check the IRT-Studio, or the IRT15H.

I am wit ya, Nerdy Nerd
but I fear no one's listening

I think it may have to do with the lack of availablity to demo
outside of the San Diego area

I had the fortune of making a trip to the factory store
where I tried my Belair
for everyone else it may be to big a leap of faith

Re: Recommend me a small amp

I've gotten a pretty good tone with a H&K Tubemeister 18 before. For metal, you might want to get a Overdrive of some sort, but other than that, it's a good thing to look into.

It's a shame that you can't get into the Orange Terror series, that would've been a perfect investment in my book, but hey, you like what you like.

Blackstar just came out with the HT Metal series and from the demos I've heard, they sound really good, so definitely check that out.

I don't know if you'd be into Marshall's but I'd look into the reissued DSL series of amps they just came out with. Lots of options to choose from as far as models. Lots of versatility and very simplistic, and tons of gain on tap when you need it. Considering getting something for myself in the range actually.

Randall also came out with some wicked sounding amplifiers called the Randall Diavlio series, and every demo I've seen of these so far, they sound amazing. They make lower wattage versions that are very affordable in your budget.

I know you said something about a solid clean, but look into an old 5150 Combo. That's essentially one of the best amps you can get out there for what you do, and the cleans may not be spectacular, but they're usable. A simple chorus effect pedal should shimmer them up a tad.

That's all that I can think of at the current moment.

Re: Recommend me a small amp

I like my dark terror lots....I wish they'd make a two channel version of it so I can upgrade....I really like the new randall recording amps...really great metal tones....

Re: Recommend me a small amp

Whoa the Ironheart studio is kind of awesome
Yeah - seems to be a real cool practice/direct recording amp.
I noticed you mentioned the VC30 earlier - great amp for blues, classic rock/heavy rock. But not for super high gain metal, unless you slam the clean with pedals (I have a VC15).
The LC models seems to have more high gain, but if you go with Laney I think the IRT models fit your style of music.

Re: Recommend me a small amp

A VHT Special 6, it will not break the bank and you can use the savings and buy additional equipment.

Re: Recommend me a small amp

My biggest concern is a really solid clean channel. Like I said that Tight Metal pedal really is amazing and does everything overdrive wise I need.

Re: Recommend me a small amp

I had the HT20 for a while and liked it for home playing. Decent cleans and pretty good driven sounds. If it's just for home it should be fine and you could gig with it if you had to. Price is good and I've never heard about quality problems from them.

For what you're describing, I'd rule out the Lionheart too - that's very much in your classic rock/blues territory, though it really is a fantastic amp at what it does do.
