Recommend me an A/B/Y Amp Switch

anyone have any recommendations for an A/B/Y pedal that works well with low added noise and no tone sucking? with an attractive price... of course. :) thanks

I have one (A/B-Y) and it works great. All Switchcraft switches and jacks. Point-to-point wiring. It's a passive box, but it has a battery/power input jack to run the lights. The lights are on a completly separate circuit from the audio.

And the box can double as a hammer, it's that heavy.

Problem with that ones approach is that you may get a ground loop hum and there is nothing in it to prevent that.

How about a stereo effects paedal and just using it to split your signal to two amps? You could use a Boss Stereo DD or Reverb for example. Or a stereo Danelectro Cool Cat Chorus. I also use a Kendrick A/B/C box sometimes...works beautifully. Lew

He asked for attractive price.

AB-Y's with isolated outputs are up around $200 or more.

Besides, you could disconnect one side of the shield in the cables leading to the amp.

well, quality over price, if a good one without hum isnt under 200$, i guess i'll shovel out 200$... what THE BEST one you can think of?

Re: Recommend me an A/B/Y Amp Switch

The best one around is the Lehle (I think that's the spelling).

However, the new ToneBone switcher is supposedly phenomenal. It is top quality, but also includes some extra options (just saw a review in a mag, but it looked like "the" one to get). Unfortunately, they are all very expensive, and I wish you could say you get what you pay for, but all you're getting is a box that allows amp switching with no hum and very few nooks and crannies.

Before you go dropping big $$$$ on top of the line, why don't you test drive a cheap A/B-Y (like a Morley or a Whirlwind) from the music shop and see if you get hum?

If it works fine, it could save you a small bundle. If it doesn't, go get the expensive one.

I'm using one of those Tone-Jam A/B-Y boxes above to connect 13 effects into two amps and I have zero hum problems.

Different amps are wired differently, and gound-loops through the input jack seems to be the exception, rather than the rule. Otherwise, no one would use the simple A/B-Y boxes.

Morley makes a really good one for about 40 bucks. You won't notice a tone loss. I use one as an A/B for a vocal processor of mine and it works really well.

The one I have has FET switching and doesn't pop. I'm not sure which one you have.

Ernie ball Stereo Pan pedals work alright for the Job. I am using that right now. you can mix the two, or pan from one amp to the other. Otherwise I would check out a framptone amp a/b/y.

If you mean the GRX4, it requires a MIDI controller, which will up the price.

And the BS2 is only good for use as a Y, so it's no good as an A/B-Y device.

Both are top notch kit though.

True!

You could always have Anologman make one. Then you'll get just what you need. I heard he does a real good job too.

Here's a stupid question, but.....

Does it matter if you use shielded(instrument) or unshielded(speaker)cable going from the A/B box to the amps input?

I'm wondering if maybe that's the cause of the hum/squeal????

Yes, you want shielded.

However, it might help to eliminate the hum if you disconnect the sheild at one end, so it's only grounded to one piece of equipment vice two. I don't know if that'll work in this situation, but I know it helps with eliminating ground-loop problems inside of a rack.

Alright Sir!!!

Mr Burkweiser is hooking me up with his GCX switcher unit, so hopefully all problems will be solved. But I still have a Morley A/B/Y box that I might wanna use sometime....or atleast be confident that there isn't a problem with it in case I wanna trade or sell it down the road.

Oh....and I was using shielded.....Thanks! :)

:) Yep! That is the best way to do it, but it is a little pricey.
