Recommend me some guitars.

I tried to post this earlier but I lost the whole thing and it didn't work. So here goes, again. The other one was much longer than this one will be.

Ok, so basically I'm looking to purchase a new guitar. My original plan was to upgrade the pick-ups on my MIM Fender Strat, then Plan B was to go through with the original plan but add a new decent amp. And now the new plan (Plan C) is to get a new guitar.

This will be my second guitar, ever. When I bought my first guitar I didn't know anything about guitars; such as wood and all the other stuff that makes a guitar sound the way it does. So what I ended up with was a Fender Strat, which I like.

The second time around I want to make the right informed, educated decision so I will be satisfied with the purchase.

I want to keep it under $800 or so.

At the moment I am looking at one guitar in particular. I haven't had the opportunity to play it yet, but I've held it and it is pretty light.
What are the pros and cons of light and heavy wieght guitars? Is there a difference?
http://www.ibanez.com/guitars/guitar.asp?model=DMM1 << That's the guitar, Ibanez DMM1.
I'm definately going to test drive it before I buy it though. I think only 300 of these guitars will be available worldwide. So that adds to the mysteriousness of of it, and the coolness of owning one. Plus the guitar looks so cool, among other things. Has anyone had any experience with this guitar?

I'm also looking at the ESP/Ltd. EC-1000 http://www.espguitars.com/ltd_deluxe.htm
Any thoughts on this guitar?

Any other suggestions would be very helpful.

I mainly play metal, or anything similar. Lamb of God, Megadeth, System of a Down, A Perfect Circle, and other stuff like that. Drop D, Drop C, and Standard tunings.

I hope that explains it all.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Recommend me some guitars.

I've heard great things about those New ESP/LTD EC-1000 guitars. They have great stock pickups. I believe the black and black cherry models come stock with a set of EMG 81s and the amber sunburst model comes with a Seymour Duncan JB bridge humbucker and a 59' neck humbucker. I actually have the same exact pickup setup as offered with the Amber Sunburst model in my Fender MIA Strat and no words can describe how great they sound. There have been a few threads posted reguarding the LTD EC-1000 guitar on here, so I'd reccommend for you to do a search on this forum and find the posts that get in depth about the guitar. I personally would get the LTD over the Ibanez. The pickups in the Ibanez are Ibanez stock pickups and i can pretty much guarantee that you will find them to thin sounding and you'll wanna replace them if you decide to go with the Ibanez. At least with the LTD EC-1000 your guaranteed quality sounding pickups. You just can't go wrong with Seymour Duncan's. Thats just my take on things, anyways, hope that helps. Goodluck.

if the neck is anywhere near the wizard profila, stay the hell away.. but i dont think it is, 3piece mahagony.. should be similar to the 80's destroyer and iceman necks. it better be =P
you'll probably be compelled to change the pups on that one as they're probably crap

the EC1000 is a damn good guitar if you ask me, awesome pups and good worksmanship, they also look awesome.

well, heavier guitars will usually sound darker as the wood density is greater than light guitars. there is also a myth that the sustain is bigger on heavier guitars, but imo, thats more of a gods mood at the time issue

Re: Recommend me some guitars.

Thanks for all the info.

You could compare the weight Ibanez DMM1 with the Gibson SG Special. They are about the same weight.

I'm kinda confused about the 3 peice mahogany neck thing. What does that mean? Does it affect the tone and whatnot?

Re: Recommend me some guitars.

Out of those two guitars, I'd go with the ESP. Then switch the neck 81 with an 85. :D

Mahogany is a great wood for metal. As Davey has already mentioned, it's a rather dense and heavy wood. I like heavy guitars. It basically lets me know that I still have a guitar strapped around me. :)

Re: Recommend me some guitars.

I'd go with the LTD myself but I'm biased... ;) It's one hell of a guitar for the money that's fo sho!

Re: Recommend me some guitars.

Out of those two, I'd go with the LTD. If I could choose anything under the sun for less than $800, I'd get one of these:

Ok, the 2nd one is kind of geared towards shredders, but I think it would still do very well for any kind of heavy music.

Re: Recommend me some guitars.

viper with a dimebucker, well, that'd feel weird since you got a strat now...

look at the LP copies a little more & pickups, maybe even an RG, rg's have really really fast necks. Fender toronados are a lot like lp's except they're alder and i think have bolt on necks, not sure

you could make a metal fat tele. Yes they exist, john 5 from manson uses one, i think its ash body with a hotrail & a twisted neck pup. If you got a fat tele, or made one atleast, you could stick something a little heavier in the neck

Re: Recommend me some guitars.

no, NO RG unless it's a prestige one.. those neck suck donkey balls! they are so ****ing thin that it's not even funny anymore

Re: Recommend me some guitars.

Between the 2 mentioned...ESP hands down!!! The pups are killer , the hardware is killer, the choise of woods is ...well it's a killer axe! The Iben-had is gonna be rare but so is my steak! No really...it's just not a great guitar. The SG would be a good choise, I don't like the neck on most SG's but thats me. Other people might not agree but $800.00 is enough for a great guitar...

Gibson Les Paul Vintage Mahogany $799.99
Schecter C-1 Artist Limited Edition $499.99
Gibson Faded Flying V $629.99
Fender Cuistom Telecaster FMT $599.89
Dean Hardtail Select Guitar $659.00
Fender Telecaster HH Black Out Guitar $599.89
Gibson X-Plorer Swamp Ash Studio $749.00
Schecter PT Custom $549.00
ESP LTD Dave Mustaine Signature DV8-R $769.00
Epiphone Elitist 1961 SG Standard $799.00
Fernandes Ravelle Deluxe Electric Guitar $799.00

All these guitars are under the $800.00 mark. The 2 guitars you named had 2 things in common...buckers and hardtail. The guitars on this list are all pretty different but all 11 are hardtail and dual bucker axes. Goodluck with your search, hope this helps.

Re: Recommend me some guitars.

Add the Epiphone Goth Explorer to that list, that guitar is sick. It's probably my favourite 6-stringed guitar, I would've bought that if it fit in a gig-bag, lol.

Re: Recommend me some guitars.

i have an hh blackout, the neck is really similar to a lite ash tele

but i don't think its really a metal guitar, it could be, i mean, basswood, set neck, HH, but stock its really not

Re: Recommend me some guitars.

I've played all kinds of music on all kinds of guitars...

Remember,

The 1st sabbath record was a Strat
Richie Blackmore used/used a strat
Early Zep was a Tele
Jerry Cantrell uses both Strats and Teles

It doesn't have to have buckers to crunch

Re: Recommend me some guitars.

Check out Schecters, you won't be disappointed. Best bang for buck.
