Recommend Me Some Strings!

Like the title says, tell me what you like! I've been playing DR on electric and acoustic for years. Tone is great and they rarely break. But the consistency is starting to gick me off. I get a bad string too often for my taste. I'm not a fan of D'addario tone and Ernies have broken on me in the past. Still, tell me what you guys like and why!

I use 12-59 for B standard (works well for drop A, too). The .059 actually has some acoustic resonance (I can feel the rumble), which I have NEVER run into with other strings. The package they arrive in isn't coiled like most strings (in fact I have a couple of sets hanging on my wall with a pushpin), so they don't need much stretching.

I actually broke a couple strings right off the bat because I'm used to strings that require some major stretching for at least a day. I think I've had them on for more than a month and haven't had to change strings. Best strings I've found for low tunings.

Re: Recommend Me Some Strings!

I use D'Addario XL for my hard-tail guitars; gauges vary from 9-42 on most of the Fender-scale instruments to 9-46 or 10-46 on Gibson instruments. I've used these for a LONG time.

I've used Fender Super Bullets (9-42) for more than 20 years on my G&L guitars with the Leo Fender designed Dual Fulcrum Vibrato. I've also tried the Stainless Bullets and Original Bullets (pure nickel), and they work fine too.

Both D'Addario and Fender strings have been very consistent over the years. They are cost effective, and easily available.

On acoustics, I prefer D'Addario phosphor bronze--been using them since they were first introduced and nothing beats them. Most of my Martin and Taylor dreads get -17 medium gauge, two get the D'Addario -19 Bluegrass gauge, and the Ibanez Artwood gets -16 lights. If I'm playing a lot, I'll use the regular D'Addario EJ sets; if a guitar is going to be sitting a bit and only played occasionally I use the EXP sets. Again...consistent, cost effective, easily available and good sounding. I've found some good deals this past year on Martin SP strings, and while they are usually slightly more expensive than the D'Addarios, they are a very fine string. I gave up trying Elixirs on my Taylor 710--they break, they have higher tension, and they simply don't sound as good.

I'll usually re-string a guitar and let it sit for 24 hours to stretch the strings, rather than yanking on them. This seems to maximize string life. Washing your hands before a playing session is a good idea. I find that keeping them clean and lubricated (I use the Dunlop 65 String Cleaner) also goes a long way to improve string life. I find that about 15-20 of sofa time is about max life for my strings, or 8-12 hours of live performance time. Usually, it's the fret wear on the strings that is the determining factor.

That's how I do it.

Re: Recommend Me Some Strings!

Different strings for different axes', but on Strats and Tele's, I love the Everly B52's. (Yes, that's Everly as in Phil Everly of the Everly Bros.)

They have the same "spank" that I like from a Cool Rails. It's hard to describe. They give me a certain attack that begs for pinch harmonics. They're worth buying a set just to try.
(I have no affiliation with Everly strings. I just like 'em.) :)

P.S. I like the Rockers also. Oddly, they aren't showing up on Everly's own site.

For a while I was using Dunlop strings and was pretty happy. They broke in quickly, lasted a long time, and IIRC, I only ever broke one. The tone is nothing special, but the durability makes it a pretty good choice in my mind.

Re: Recommend Me Some Strings!

I use D'addario ProSteel 10s on everything except my Fender Jazzmaster. The Fender gets Fender Super Bullets 11s. I like the extra power, brightness and tight low end of the ProSteels. For the Fender I like the little bit of warmth the heavy nickle Super Bullets give me. Both strings last quite a while too.

Re: Recommend Me Some Strings!

I use Ernie Balls or D'Addario XL for my electrics.. (10-46).. which ever is the best deal when I'm down to my last pack. They break in quick and I've never had any issues with either. I've only had one string break.. knock on wood.. last song of the set.. I only use Elixirs on my acoustics.

Re: Recommend Me Some Strings!

I've always bought the cheapest strings I can find from any of the well known brands.

Ernie Ball, Fender, GHS, Gibson, D'Addario, Dean Markley are the ones I've used the most and to be honest none have disappointed me. Right now I bought like 10 packs of D'Addario XLs and they are awesome. The packaging looks pretty moisture resistant, which is a big thing for me because I like buying my strings and picks in bulk. Before that I used to buy the Dean Markley Vintage Reissues, which were crazy cheap so I'd buy tons and tons and keep them well stored to avoid rust since the packaging wasn't as good.

Honestly, any decent brand will do. I used to worship Ernie Ball until I realized the difference between NPS strings wasn't that much as long as they were decent.

Once you get into pure nickel or stuff like Thomastik or Pyramid then yeah, there's a noticeable difference, but that's another bag.

Re: Recommend Me Some Strings!

I'm happy with D'Addario XLs and Ernie Ball Slinkys. Sometimes use Rotosound though they seem a bit tighter to me.

9-46 on my LPs and SG, 9-42 on my Strat, and I recently discovered I LOVE D'Addario 9.5-44 on my Tele.

Re: Recommend Me Some Strings!

Ernie Ball Cobalts, skinny top heavy bottom. Those or D'Addario EXP 11's.

Re: Recommend Me Some Strings!

Dunlop Heavy Core 11-50. Nice tone, good break in time. They rarely break on me and usually when they do, it's long since time to restring.

Re: Recommend Me Some Strings!

I just found out . . . Phil Everly did the Cleartone strings. Evan Skopp approves.

Re: Recommend Me Some Strings!

You should try the D'addario balanced tension sets, I'm a huge fan of their .10's.

Re: Recommend Me Some Strings!

I am completely enamored of these things. I won a box of the 11s and figured I would never use them, as Pure nickel never works very well for me ( either they are too dull, or they are so soft I destroy the wounds within a few days) I was a complete idiot for not trying them sooner. I have 'em on all of my guitars now, best feel and tone I have found in pure nickel, and these have gone 6 weeks before I needed to change them out. No corrosion issues for me either.

In NPS, I like Dean Markley Nickel Steels/Blue Steels, GHS Boomers, and EB Slinkys.

I actually like those a lot.

Re: Recommend Me Some Strings!

I got a discounted ten pack of D'addario EXPs 10-52 a while back. They last more than twice as long as uncoated strings, feel comfy to play on a 25.5 inch neck in standard, sound nice, and I haven't broken any of the strings after six packs. Great strings!
