Recommend pups for Gibson SG faded

I'm starting to get irritated with the 490 Gibson stockie set (very sterile) and want SD to come to the rescue. My preferences: PAF output, bright neck, something different than in my LP (Jazz/JB), and note that I really like the 59 bridge - so if you think it's a good match, let me know. Any suggestion is welcome - thanks.

Re: Recommend pups for Gibson SG faded

I think the 59' bridge would be fantastic in an SG. A bright neck is a little tougher if you want something different from the Jazz. I have always found 59's necks to be bright, but a little "boomy" in the neck. It may be different in a lighter guitar like the SG.

I would probably start with the 59' set, then if you don't like the neck you can use the 21 day exchange policy to try something different. PG could be a good choice. Just order from Blackrose or Lew, and you'll have no problems.

I like a set of 59's in an SG. Instant Clapton/Cream tone. Also instant Duane Allman tone as an early 60's SG is what Duane played slide on and the 59's really resemble those early alnico 5 Gibson humbuckers in the SG's used by Clapton, Duane, AC/DC, etc. The Jazz neck and 59B would be a real good choice too for a little more clarity from the neck pickup. I agree with the other guys, the '59b would be great. As I've said many times before, the Seth is another good option. I'm using that in my LP/SG now and love it, but will eventually switch to '59's I'm sure. "I cain't never be satisfied" :laugh2:

Yes! the '59b is THE bridge pickup for an SG :) As far as the neck goes, I'm still working on that, but I'm gonna try a PGn or a Phat Catn

Re: Recommend pups for Gibson SG faded

I've just got a line on a used JB - I love it I the LP - but would it be suitable for the SG?

Re: Recommend pups for Gibson SG faded

JB would be great for an SG, but maybe not quite what you're looking for if you already have one in you LP. It'll still do you good, but if you prefer a lower gain pup, go for the 59. Also, +1 to the Phat Cat in the neck - FANtastic combo IMO!

Actually... lots of people have played SGs with p90s (Pete Townsend for one...) so why don't u think about a phat cat in the bridge too?
