Recommend some PUPs for a Strat

Hi everyone:

I have an old strat with stock pups (single coil), which needs some replacement pups. Thought of asking which work well with strats. I mostly use humbuckers but this is a new approach so I'll really apperciate your comments.

I play calssic rock and progressive rock. I use a V-plex (marshall 1968 plexi clone) thru a Mesa recto oversize 4x12 loaded with v30's and greenbacks. I might also add this week a 1966 bassman head to the formula, which probably be used more with the strat. Same cab (Mesa).

Thanks for the help...... :laugh2:

Re: Recommend some PUPs for a Strat

The Kinman Blues set or the Kinaman pickup set are the best pickups ever made for the strat

Re: Recommend some PUPs for a Strat

I use the Duncan SSL-1's in the neck and middle ( for vintage type strat tone ), and an SSL-3 in the Bridge. I rarely use the Bridge pickup on a Strat. The Antiquities are also very popular. If ya want a Hot Pickup in the Bridge ( Humbucker), the only one I have experience with is the DiMarzio HS-3. Yngwie uses the HS-3.

I like my APS-II's with an SSL-3 bridge. The SS-3 is really a great pup if you wire the bridge for tone and roll off a little treble.

I have some clips of this set here:

Two alternatives for the bridge would be a Custom (SSL-5 or 6), or a Twangbanger.

really, the SSL's, APII's and Antiquity are all nice, and the wood might come into play a little

The SSL-1's are my favorite N & M Duncans for a bright, bubbly vintage tone...and the Duncan Antiquity Texas Hots N & M for a slightly smoother & thicker vintage tone. I like the Duncan Antiquity Custom or Duncan Twangbanger for the bridge position...or a Fralin Steel Pole 43 for a tone similar to a P90. Lew

Re: Recommend some PUPs for a Strat

thanks kindly! :)

I have to give credit to jeremy and others here for turning me onto those pickups.

Re: Recommend some PUPs for a Strat

i am partial to the antiquities with the antiquity custom bridge. That set let me play my strat again.

Re: Recommend some PUPs for a Strat

There's also the DiMarzio Red Velvet and Blue Velvet pups, they sound classic but new. You get a little old school tone with new school attitude.

Re: Recommend some PUPs for a Strat

I like the Duncan Quarter Pound Staggered in my Strat (bridge). I play classic rock, and this pickup gets me a good Ritchie Blackmore sound.

Re: Recommend some PUPs for a Strat

Id go a set of ssl-5 or ssl-6 pickups, or two of them in neck and middle with something a little hotter like a lil screamin demon in the bridge. Although i rekon an ssl5 or ssl6 would sound killer in the bridge too.

Either that or a set of EMG SA's, they sound awesome in strats!

Re: Recommend some PUPs for a Strat

Another plug from me for the Antiquity Texas Hot pickups for strat..The best single coils I've used to date! Hands down the best!

Re: Recommend some PUPs for a Strat

U know if one of u guys actually ever used Kinmans for a strat u would be throwing out your seymour duncan single coil pickups in a second. The Kinman sets are perfect for the strat in all kinds of playing situations.
