Recommend some strat singles.

Got a pal with a strat and he is pulling out the lace sensors and wants to go with Duncans. Wants something vintage sounding, tradional pole look that can quack and get Claptonish..
Im not real versed on single coils, so help us out. thanks!

I may be completely off-base here but I thought the infamous "quack" that you refer to is produced by 2 standard single coils being on, or when a strat selector switch is in "2" or "4." So to achieve this you'd need a true single coil. Avoid stacked pups.

1. Duncan SSL-1 neck and middle...bright, bubbly, 50's like and very Clapton-esque in a Layla sort of way...with maybe a JB JR., Little Screamin' Demon, Hot Rails or Little 59 for hotter, paf-ish (sort of...) bridge pickup tone for soloing. The SSL-1's are about 5% stronger than most 50's Strat pickups...maybe a little more "bark" to the mids but still that great Dire Straits glassy chime.

2. Duncan APS-1 neck and middle (like Jeff Beck has used!) and Twangbanger bridge (for a Tele-esque tone).

3. Duncan Antiquity Texas Hot neck and middle and Antiquity Custom bridge for anything from SRV to Dire Straits...maybe 5% more output than vintage 50's Strat pickups and maybe 5% thicker, smoother, chunkier and warmer than vintage. GREAT VIBE! My personal favorites.


Those are my three favorite Duncan sets for the Strat.

Another pickup to consider that's often overlooked is the SSL52-1 "Five-Two" which will give you a great "Strat" sound: percussive yet sweet.

Great post from Lew....I use all 3 of these pickups that Lew mentions and all are really nice...The Antiquities win overall though...Next up for total vintage would be the SSL1s and the APS2s if you need to tame a bright axe down a bit...The SSL1s are A5,AP2s are A2 and I think the Antiquities are A2 also...

On mine also...The Texas Hots are the best single coil pickups I've ever used so far...Hands down,they are perfect for everything I ever wanted in my strat single coils...I'm very happy with these pickups..I got mine from Lew and on his advice also...Got em quick also..

Thanks all! I'm guessing the Texas hots are good for a SRV vibe?? He wants just reg output strat pups. No hotties or stacks.
Sounds like the SSL may be it.. Can those go in the bridge too? Lew mentions neck and middle.

Do you have much experience with these pups? I've been wondering about them for the neck and middle in my G&L but I've never heard them.

Just aiming for a superstrat I guess - I already have a JBjnr in the bridge

The only thing that's hot is the Custom and you WANT that, believe me, it balances the Texas Hots. These pups are not flaming. They are IMHO the best Strat pups made for true Strat tone with some 'tude when you need it. I can't freakin' believe how good they sound. Good luck,

Hi,

I'm about to get a set of Antiquity Texas Hot pups this weekend, and from the feedback above, it might be a toss-up between those and SSL-1s's.

Can anyone say which of these sets would go "better" with a basswood body? or how about on an alder body?
