Recommend some Strings please***

Okay all,

I like the sound of new strings and I don't like my strings getting too dull, so often I find myself changing strings every two weeks, which seems a bit much to me. I know there are some strings called "Elixir' or something that are supposed to last a while and I was wondering if someone could tell me the name of the company that makes them.

Also, could you recommend any other strings that you like to use, that last a while. I need some more options, because I remember Elixirs being expensive.

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

what you using atm?

to make them last longer always wash your hands first, and wash your hands if your practising and feel yourself sweating.

elixir make the strings. :)

theres two coatings - poly and nano web

personally i have a very bad experience with both, have had 2 sets of each for electric and all have snapped on me.

for acoustic they are nice - i've had a few sets snap but on the whole they are really good and do last.

i've ordered some DR long life strings which should get here on tuesday, so i'll let you know what i think of those :)

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

oh forgot to add - i usually use ernie balls for electric and thomastik for acoustic - and have never snapped any of them

only sets i've snapped have been daddario, elixir and fender. Not saying they are poor strings, they are just strings i have had bad experiences with

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

Right now, I use D'Addarios and I like their sound and I never snap them. In general, I never snap strings unless by mistake I catch them on something (like the edge of my desk, for example :) ) My guitar's nut and bridge saddles are quite good and strings very rarely snap... I might try some ernie balls though...

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

they are a bit more mellow sounding than daddario from my experience - but thats why i like them

i got those DR Extra life for acoustic - they seem good so far
i've also got some DR black beauties im gonna put on my gordon smith after i get the string through bridge installed :)

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

I like Dean Markley strings, they are nickel/stainless steel are they last prety long. I use 11-54. Great vintage tone in them...

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

I like Elixirs. i swear by them. But maybe that's because I get them for free. That and Ernie Ball, I get them for free as well. :)

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

I like EB as they aren't as bright sounding (to me) as other strings and seem to get that broken in sound pretty quickly.

I also like GHS Boomers. Nice bright tone, and I've found the last quite awhile.

I change my strings every 1 to 3 months. I don't know why, but for some reason they never seem to rust on me. If I let one of my friends play my guitars they seem to have rust on them the next day, but never when I play them.

Wierd.

Also, if you find yourself swapping strings too often, you could try boiling your old ones and re-installing them. I've never tried it myself, but a friend of mine swears by this.

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

I use DR Pure Blues 10s .... they are pure nickel strings and have this amazing sound to them: smoother than steel, almost broken in already, but with the cripsness of being new, as well as the long-life typical of DR strings ... and I do mean LONG life ... DRs last twice as long as any other string.

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

havent used DR's for electric but love em for acoustic. i've got some of the long life ones on now and i dont think i'm going back.

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

I've used Gibson Vintage Reissue for almost 3 years now, I've only broken 3 strings, and I change them on average every 4 months. They really stay sounding good for a very long time, and while I've tried Elixers, D'dadarios, EB's and didn't like them much, I've never heard of anyone who tried Gibson Vintage Reissues and didn't like them.

My first set of Elixers just turned me off to them alltogether, they felt like plastic, sounded like plastic, and I broke one within a week.

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

ditto that elixir experience.

but my guitar teacher has had a set on his acoustic for 4 months, and to say he teaches full time thats quite a feat.

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

I use D'addario 10's, never really tried out other brands besides in thicker guages. I just did that cause I can get a 10 pack for 30 bucks...I'll go string shopping sometime, and get some Dean Markley's, EB's, DR's, GHS's, and some of those Gibson's.

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

dean markely blue steels. they are dipped in liquid nitrogen to tighten the windings up and they last a long time.

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

I currently use DR's and so far I am very pleased with them. I have the DR Strings PHR11 Pure Blues Nickel Heavy and they sound awesome. They last a long time too! I've tried the GHS strings and I didn't like them. Just didn't have the same feel and tone as the DR's.

Can you use the pure blues for modern or heavy music or are they strictly blues?

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

D'addario 10's are all I have ever put on my guitars. My brother uses all those new funky brands that come out, and I really dont see much of a difference. I had a set of D'addarios last 3 and a half months on my guitar with me playing 3-6 hours a day. Thats good enough for me. I like changing strings fairly often, I usually take that chance to polish up the body and detail the hardware real nice. Everytime I put new strings on its like im getting a new guitar, I love it!

Re: Recommend some Strings please***

Elixirs are always nice, DR's last a while also, but thats already been said.

you should give Snarling Dogs strings a shot, they sound awsome and last pretty long. the coating on the string stays "shiny" alot longer than normal strings, and they stay very playable until they loose a bit on their tone and then you know you gotta change them.
those strings are not for everyone, but it wont hurt you to try.
