Re: recommendation for mic

I love the sennheiser e609 for micing guitars. It's much smoother without the hi mid spike that the sm57 has.

Ditto. You can't go wrong with a Sure SM57. I have a few of them. I have also been pleased with some of the Marshall mics that I recently picked up. Great sound at a reasonable price.

Re: recommendation for mic

I'd just get a 57, & spend some time experiementing with placement before you worried about any other mics. There's a lot ur ears need to learn about placement and getting a good sound, before even bothering with a variety of more expensive mics. Also, experiement with different places to put ur amp for different effects. Sometimes u can get some nice sounds by doing things like putting an amp on a reflective surface & aimimg the mic at the floor, etc.

That is probably the best advice I have EVER heard anyone offer in responce to this question!!! The SM57 is a VERY durable mic and effective as well... Until you learn the nuances of mic placement, which is an art in itself, you'd be wasting the difference in price of "higher quality" mics... DOnt get me wrong, they have a suitable reason for their increaseed response, but as SF says, learn the basics first, or you won't be getting the full benefit of the expensive mics!!!

Re: recommendation for mic

Another +1 for the sm57.
The sm57 is also a decent vocal mic for live performances, when you use a mic stand. It's highly rated as a guitar amp mic for live situations too.
You can get them for about $80 at musiciansfriend.com.

Re: recommendation for mic

i will get the sm57 ,i was confused about mics cause i thougt that theres a million kind of them,i feel better now thanks for your help.

Re: recommendation for mic

yeah, SM57 will have *everything* covered until you're ready for a nicer one - its the only mic i have, and i've used it for vocals, guitar+bass amps, snares, bass drums and as a rushed overhead replacement... fantastic mic, i totally prefer it to the SM58. that windsheild takes some of the 'rawness' out of the sound, i love that aspect of the 57 :)
