recommendations for a guitar

hey again!!

this time im looking for a recommendation for a guitar.

i like strats, but one problem that i always run into is this: when im playing really high on the neck, the lower horn always gets in the way of my left hand. so i'd like somthing that has a wider horn and maybe better fret access. my first idea is an ibanez RG, but i'd like to look around a bit more. you all know what i play, so it's gonna be for proggresive metal. maybe a V? i dont have a problem sitting down with V's so maybe that too?

Re: recommendations for a guitar

Check out the Scheceter 006's. Very nice upper fret access. 24 Frets, I have the Terry Corso artist model, which is dscontinued. If you get the Blackjack series they come stock with Duncans. I think JB/'59 combo. Check them out www.schecterguitars.com and let me know what you think of them.

Re: recommendations for a guitar

nice stuff.
i'd also like to add that id like something with a floyd on it as well. how are the necks on schecters?

Re: recommendations for a guitar

I was going to steer you to Music Man, but with the floyd, I don't know where to send you.

Re: recommendations for a guitar

Maybe an...Ibanez S470FM?

If you don't feel like paying 350 for that, then there are definitely other options.

Ibanez RGs are great other than the basswood, the S-Series is great too. Schecter C-1s are amazing and there is a model (only comes in black) with a floyd. You could get an ESP MH-400, which is an awesome guitar, or go with the 1000 which is even better. Hmm...I can't really think of much else that I've played.

I think that the Ibanez Sabres are awesome for the higher frets. They neck/body joint is pretty small and is easy to work with even with my hands. The lower horn scoops exactly to the 22nd fret whereas the strat scoops to about 21.5ish.

Re: recommendations for a guitar

Schecter's necks are perefect for me. Couldn't explain it, it's just the feel I like. Schecter's website has the specs on the neck.

If you want a floyd rose, Schecter Sells a C-1 Floyd Rose model. My other suggestion would be an Ibanez SZ series, but those don't have Floyd's either.

I'm not really a floyd guy... I change tunings too often to deal with them.

Re: recommendations for a guitar

<$1000: Jackson SLSMG, SL-3 and RR-5, all neck-thru, RR-5 with Original Duncans (JB/JB), SL-3 has a trem.

<$2000: Any Jackson USA Select, all sorts of models to choose from ;)

Re: recommendations for a guitar

What have you got to spend? I'm getting a Carvin on eBay myself, you might want to consider that. Those things sell for a ham sandwich, but feel and sound like dream guitars. And I'm not even talking about the selective quality woods they use and top class hardware. I've got about the same problem as you, I'm a lead player and need good upper fret acces, there's nothing more annoying than playing a fast solo and decreasing in speed because something stupid like a heel. I don't like Floyds though, that seems to be my main problem when I go shopping for fast guitars, they all have Floyds! I also don't dig Strats anymore, they're fun guitars but the shape just bores me. Too bad there aren't many reasonably priced neck-thru Les Paul guitars.

Re: recommendations for a guitar

Hey Neeradj, what model/specs is the Carvin you're getting? I just bought a Carvin on eBay too :D

My offer still stands on my S470FM, \m/(00)\m/. $350 plus shipping.

Re: recommendations for a guitar

Hey dude, I'm thinking about getting that sweet AE-185. That thing's got everything I ever wanted in a guitar and more, it's like 95 out of 100 for me. Piëzo, string-thru-body, neck-thru-body, Sperzel tuners, good pick ups, coil taps, phase switch, killer top. What more could I want? Stays in tune, sounds killer overdriven and clean, wide variety of sounds, sustain for days, good upper fret acces. Trow in a pair of Duncans and you're golden! That V220 all maple also looks really excellent in specs. I can't seem to find that new PRS-style model though.

I'll post something when I get it :)

Re: recommendations for a guitar

the problem isn't with the heel actually

the problem is actually the horn itself, i got big hands(not finger length, just big hands!) and the horn itself gets in the way :D

that S series looks appealing, whihc floyd does it have? lo-trs? edge?

Re: recommendations for a guitar

moom bro

in my humble opinion the guitar youre looking for will be a good second hand purchase.
something like a mahogany RG or a good ESP Mirage would do the trick.
before ESP decided they want to turn the LTD M series to crap, there used to be a model called M302.
this guitar will RIP for progressive and i mean it, im sure you'll be able to find one second hand. the only 'problem' it had as i can recall is the EMG-HZ pickups - im a big fan of EMG's but the HZ's just have to go (compared to aftermarket pickups).
if i recall correctly the guitar is mahogany wings, maple neck and maple top with rosewood fingerboard, dual humbucking pickups and a floyd rose tremolo.
i could realy hear you playing one of those.

Re: recommendations for a guitar

A Jackson soloist should do what you want.

Re: recommendations for a guitar

actually my charvel right now is basically a soloist
it's one of the san dimas series models out in the early 90's

and about the petrucci :(

alot of money my friend :D

Re: recommendations for a guitar

I just got a washburn N4 and that has the most killer neck with the best fret access of any strat style guitar I have ever seen. The stephens cutaway is awesome. Not everyone likes the look of these though.
