Re: Recommendations for replacement for G12T-75 speaker
I wanted to provide an update about my experience and impressions so far in sampling speaker candidates to replace some or all of the G12T-75s in my Marshall 4x12. I really appreciate the great insights and recommendations that members have provided in their replies to this thread.
Before I get to the speakers themselves, I want to mention a change in speaker configuration that I have made that I think I will keep as I move forward. Prior to this experiment, I had been running all 4 speakers in the cab. At this point, I prefer running just 2 at a time - either the 2 on the left side or 2 on the right side of the cab, with each side being a different set of speakers than the other. That gives me two voicing options to switch between, depending on what is appropriate for the genre I am playing at that moment and/or the characteristics of the guitar that i have plugged in that moment. Also, the tonal differences that occur just from running at 4 ohms load vs 8 ohms load probably has some impact too but it's hard (for me) to say how much.
So, speaker-wise, I tend to most often prefer the side that has the Celestion V-type mixed in, vs the side that has the 2 G12-65s. That is probably more due to me playing metal genre material more of the time than rock. That V-Type has more mids than either the T75 or the 12-65, but without the V30s nasty mid spike. The overall sound improved when i replaced the T75 that I was combining the V-Type with, with a Eminence "custom-design" that came out of a Jet City 1x12 can that I had sitting around in a box. This combo really resolved the loose low end issue i had with the T75. So much so that a Dean Icon guitar that I planned to sell off because it seems inherently boomy in its low end, now does not suffer that problem.
While i do think the G12-65s are an improvement over the T75s, it is the G12-65 side that i would like to explore further options , like swapping one of them with one of the recommended speakers that some of you have recommended, like the Classic Lead 80 or the Eminence Wizard. The G12-65s seem a little too "warm" and/ or "soft" for my tastes - not sure exactly how to describe it. I have been keeping an eye out for a used Classic Lead 80 on Fee-Bay, Reverb and other sites but most are priced so that they are not much savings over just buying new. I will keep looking though, as well as used Eminence Wizards.
Thanks again everyone.
