Recommended wiring setup for JB Jr \ STK-6?

Hey all, I just got a JB Jr and an STK-6 to go in one of my Strats.

To be honest, this time I didn't really cherry pick what I wanted, I needed noiseless options and this was what the store had in stock.

The middle pickup is an SSL-1 Bridge model that I had laying around. so it is not RWRP.

The JB Jr. has been a delight I will say, it immediately blew me away how good it sounds, jeez, I might even like this more than a full sized JB? It's very close, anyways.

The STK-6 didn't impress me the same way, but I still need to play with a bit. It seemed definitely lower output than I was expecting, and doesn't sound all that Stratty to my ears. Kinda sounds like a wet blanket or something. I think I may just need to balance the height against the JB, but I just installed them last night and didn't touch the heights yet so I think there's still a really good chance I'll fall in love with it once I get it dialed in. I also might try removing the neck tone control from the circuit to see what that sounds like, the guitar is 20 years old on the original pots and I can tell they're getting worn out.

Anyway, here's my issue: The 2 and 4 positions still have hum, I'm guessing because the pickup isn't RWRP. I know that when you're doing auto split in 2 and 4 , you do NOT want RWRP for the middle.

I have no intention of splitting either of the humbuckers, because I love the way the JB+Middle pickup sounds, adds some crunchy broken glass on top of the JB and I love that sound.

So - am I actually supposed to have an RWRP in the middle? or.. is JB+Middle always gonna have some hum since it's 3 coils? I can live with that if I have to. But what about the Neck+Middle? same thing? do I *have* to split the neck pickup to get hum free Neck+Middle position? I was going to try flipping the black and white wires on the middle pickup, but I think that would just give me out of phase on the in-betweens (and still hum..)

If it's because I need an RWRP, Can I flip the middle pickup upside down as a temporary solution?

Finally wanted to ask what you thought of having a parallel switch for the JB. I already love how it sounds both dirty and clean, so I don't know, I looked up some clips and it seems like you can barely tell a difference between the two. Anyone have a parallel switch on the JB Jr. and think it's a "must-have" option?

Any suggestions of why the STK-6 isn't quite impressing me would be appreciated too.

Cheers all : private:

if you dont split the bridge and neck pups, youll never get humcancelling in 2&4.

im guessing the stks6 is in the neck? if so, its probably pretty dark. id remove the tone control for starters and see if it gets a little better. 250k pots?

STKS6 is in the neck, yeah, and it's the stock 250k fender pots yes. But good news - I raised the height quite a bit and lowered the JB, and it sounds MUCH better now, it's vicious and seems to have a lot more edge now. Now i'm impressed, these Duncan Stacks are great (it's my first time trying one) I still am going to try disconnecting the tone control and see what that does. I never use the neck tone control anyway, just the bridge sometimes. I love how the JB sounds with the 250k, so I'm a little worried to swap to 500ks yet, I'll try disconnecting that tone control first and report back.

RE: The hum cancelling - Damn, maybe someday I will swap the SSL1 for a Classic Stack then, then I could have all 5 positions be hum cancelling.

Thanks Jer :beerchug:
