Ok so im planning on starting up a nice little recording rig for myself for Home computer recordings. I know ill make very very good use for this stuff for at least 10 years so I composed a list while shopping for the best i can get while remaining inexpensive. Take a look and tell me if there is anything i should add/ditch/switch

Input is appreciated (By the way i live in Canada so must beable to ship to Canada

Re: Recording Gear

Ditch the e609 for a 57, ditch the ART for a Studio Projects VTB-1, or ditch the preamp and soundcard for a Presonus Firebox.

Re: Recording Gear

That Presonus Firebox seems very interesting as it comes with drum loops/Cubase and looks like it would work great with my laptop too which would be great for portability plus my laptop is much higher quality than my pc; Im guessing it skips the Computers soundcard and does all the sound generating in the box?? And other peoples thoughts on Shure 57 Vs Sennheiser E609. Also I was looking at the Mogami Gold Studio Mic Cables they are pretty much the same price as the Monster p 500 and specs look to be better. Any other inputs?
Im hoping to get around 250 Canadian (maybe more) from a Peavey Raptor Plus/Rage 158/Gig bag/strap/Cable to help towards all of this. Also Do i need a Male Xlr to Female 1/4 adapter or Female XLR to Male 1/4 adapter for connecting it to the computer

I like the Shure SM57, if I only could have one mic on an island that would be it. As far as the ART stuff it's okay and so is the Audiophile. Keep in mind if you run a Presonus Firebox your computer needs to be pretty fast. You might consider the Toneport UX2 as it has some great features at the price point. It will give you mic pres for vocals, guitars, bass and also all the Line6 modeling stuff and will replace the Audiophile and ART - I think it will sound better too than those two pieces.

What speed is your computer?

True, on all points! I just think that for the price, the VTB-1 is an unbeatable pre, and I personally use the Audiophile, so I can recommend those, but if you have the PC to do it, I'd go with the Presonus.

Re: Recording Gear

Your laptops hard drive won't get you too many audio tracks because of the speed of most internal drives. You should be able to get at least 6 tracks though maybe more. Lots of people run external firewire drives for their audio and keep the OS and programs like Logic, Cubase etc. on the internal.

Yeah, I recommend that as well. I run a seperate 200gig drive for all my media files.

Agreed, you don't get anymore versatile than a 57. Though you also don't get anymore generic. :>

If I had to pick one mic, though, it would be an AKG C414B - sounds awesome and covers all of your bases in terms of patterns, filters and pads. Aside from micking a kick drum, which would probably kill it, you can pretty much do it all with that mic. And of course, it's got a price tag to match.

Also this this recording is going to be primarly of electric guitar With some rare vocals and acoustic guitar.

Re: Recording Gear

Your laptop should work fine for what you want as is.

I have the Toneport UX1 and have owned the M-Audio Firewire 410 both are powered from the computer which is great because I could go sit in the park and record if i wanted. The M-Audio stuff for the money kicks butt - I'm sure the Presonus is in the same league.

Re: Recording Gear

Great please comment on which would be better in terms of mic cables Moganami or Monster Cables (should be around price range of 40$ each) And also to convert the mic cable so it can plug into the computer do i need a male XLR to Male 1/4' adapter or Female XLR to Male 1/4' adapter

Re: Recording Gear

You shouldn't need any converters - Mic to preamp, preamp to computer.

I'd go with some Canare cables if at all possible.

Re: Recording Gear

Monster and Mogami are fine, you're spliting hairs on cables.

For what you are going to do the thing to concern yourself with is a good clean signal to disc. It helps to have a slight bit of compression on some things when tracking so again I'm going to make a plug for the Toneports.

Care to explain what that is?
-Thanks

FireWire is a serial computer data transfer standard Apple Computer invented a few years back to improve upon the USB standard of the time. Now there's USB 2.0, which offers pretty much the same transfer rates as FireWire.

On a computer or similar piece of hardware, a FireWire port is similar to a USB port, but they're not interchangeable. That is to say, you can't plug a USB device into a FireWire port or a FireWire device into a USB port.
