Recording Method: Does this work?

Hi guys,
I'm still new to this recording thing. So bear with the questions i have to ask, heh. Planning to record few instruments at once as well. (eg. guitar, bass, keyboard, vox, drums)

Currently I have a 12 channel Mixer, Audigy Computer Soundcard.

1. Can i just output my amp direct to the mixer. Then mixer out to my comp? How would that sound? Cause I heard that the convention would be to use a mic and place it infront of the guitar amp.

2. Should i just get a E-Mu 0404 USB kinda thing and record thru there? And if i do, do i still need to mic the guitar amplifier?

Thanks,
Ken

Mic your amp, line outs suck tone wise.

How do you want to do this? Can you give a little mroe details? Live, multitracked etc...

Yeah i wanna record my jam session too, for that way i'd definitely Mic in.
However for recording at home, i was thinking bass and guitars together at the same time, then the drums and vocals will come in separately

it sounds like you only have two recording inputs at a time with your setup, is this right? 2 ins & 2 outs on your digi converter. If so it's gonna be harder to get good drum tracks ..you'll have to get a mix of the kit summed into the two outputs of your board, then into the digi converter & then the computer..I'd suggest just a kick, snare & 2 overheads for cymbals (don't forget to check your phase on the kick, a 180 degree phase switch will help or get a cheap polarity reversal plug from radioshack & insert it into the kick drum mic...depending on the placement of your other mics, you may or may not need it) , a mic on each tom would help too.

Motu makes a 12 in & out unit that would serve your board well (from the sounds of it) & allow you to seperate tracks in your computer program for further refining.

hope this helps

Plus, you'll want to track the drums first.

Can you give more detail on exactly you want to do and what your gear is for this?
