Recording options? Amp or Digital?

I'm looking for a semi affordable way of recording in a very terrible recording space... my living room. Should I buy a mic to place in front of my amp? If so whats gonna be my best bet for quality and affordability? Less than $250 would be nice. Or should I just plug my guitar straight into my laptop and run a program? If thats the case what program should I use to get the sounds of a marshall and some basic pedals?

If you cannot turn up the amplifier to an appreciable level, go digital. What sort of computer setup do you have if you go digital?

Just a bare bones beats audio HP. I dont have any recording software installed yet except for Audacity. And that was just to test my cable to make sure it works

Re: Recording options? Amp or Digital?

The recording software isn't important in the long run. Does Audacity have any amp sims?
If so, problem solved, go forth and make merry music! :)

Unfortunately its just basic recording software. Can only get a clean sound and its suuuper compressed

Re: Recording options? Amp or Digital?

What amp would you be micing if you went that route? Also do you have an interface for recording? A used pod hd would give you a lot of decent sounds with some tweaking. If you get a mic for recording guitar I'd recommend a shure sm57.

Re: Recording options? Amp or Digital?

Just remember the number one rule of getting a good recording. Are you ready? Here it is. Have something good to record. If Eddie Van Halen recorded "Eruption" on one of these....

it would have still changed the world. But as TO said...probably best to go direct if you have no decent recording space and volume is an issue. Plus going direct you can overdub without needing headphones or worrying about bleed from one track to the next. Have fun.

Marshall dsl40c or the dsl100H on a 2x12 orange is what I'll be using. And I dont have any kind of interface. I could use one for sure so Ill check out the pod

Re: Recording options? Amp or Digital?

Nice amp! I have one of the older JCM DSLs and it records well. Either way you will really need an interface, I would NOT recommend using the pod as an interface, although it can be done. The headphone out on the pod is pretty terrible, when I record with the pod I just plug it into my interface and monitor through that. The pod is nice for versatility if you need a lot of different amp sounds, but a properly miced up Marshall is hard to beat.

Niiice Id love to have a JCM in my arsenal. I'm digging the dsl series with minor upgrades like speaker swaps and V1 tube slot upgrades. Looks like Ill be picking up a mic for it then

Re: Recording options? Amp or Digital?

Ok, this sounds weird but if most of the tone comes from the preamp the maybe you can try connect the amp FX send into your recording interface. Then whatever daw you use put a IR cab loader plugin to load some speaker IR, there are lots of free IRS. This is the way I do with my AMT SS-20, it is a preamp with real tubes and I plug its output (not the cab sim, the output that would feed a real amp fx return) into my focusrite 2i2. There are lots of free DAW software out there and lots of free plugins too so I am sure you could also use amp sim plugins very easily if my approach sounds too weird to you.

I've actually tried this before with my dsl and it pretty much sounded just like my amp miced up.

Re: Recording options? Amp or Digital?

Good to know I am not that much of a crazy guy by trying this. [emoji28] So this is like a silent recording with no need to buy a load box.

Can you play with volume where your living? Because with dsl40/orange cab, I would definitely want to mic it, rather than rely on direct recording. You can get quite good mic & preamp (you will need to connect mic through a mic preamp to record with it) for under 250$.

Shure sm57 mic is somewhat of industry standard and costs around 120$ new and well under that used. You can get good preamps for less than 100$ as well.

I paid 40€ (around 50-60$) for my Aardvark direct pro, was that cheap, because you'll need Windows XP to use it :) I would think there's plenty of similar "cheap but good" stuff out there...
Haven't got much time to set up my recording gear, so I haven't actually tried that Aardvark yet. But with 800-900$ price tag new, it should be quite decent for a home studio :D

I'm too, still looking for a good recording mic.

I can play at a good volume to reach the sweet spot of the amp of my dsl40c. The dsl100H with an orange is quite loud though so I can only use that for maybe 15 minutes at a time before I see neighbors making their way outside to see what the hell is going on. I used to use a mic from the rock band video game lmao. Its mainly just used to capture audio during practices so I remember what I played the next day. I appreciate your advice man Ill have to give it a shot

Try one of the Zoom handirecorders. A few models to choose from. Decent built in condensers and an easy learning curve.

I've made plenty of home recordings with a mic from singstar :D It's surprisingly not that bad you would think.

Its really not bad at all! Just not good for quality videos and sound clips

I think bigger problem with it was my crappy computer audio interface. Had to push mic input into full recording volume to get decent level, causing lot of extra noise in the background.
