Recording pals! What DAW/Recording software are you using?

I am so bloody fed up with ProTools LE and its bizarre bugs and compatibility issues that I've decided to stop wasting any more time and effort on troubleshooting it. I haven't recorded F all in the past month because I get the good ol' "operating system held off on interrupts too long" error. It came out of nowhere after years of stable use. I have done EVERYTHING to troubleshoot, including bought new firewire hardware and reinstalling Windows XP. I even set myself up a dual boot XP config with one of them dedicated entirely to ProTools (all non-essential hardware turned off, no antivirus, no Internet, etc.) and the f-ing thing is still gagging.

Anyway, enough of my sob story. What are you guys using? I'm leaning towards SONAR since I'm familiar with the Cakewalk stuff. I briefly tried Cubase, but the interface was so ugly I got turned off.

What do you recommend, or not recommend?

I use Audacity, but its probably too simple for most things.

If you have a second drive, you can try out some of the Linux programs, which are really good.

Re: Recording pals! What DAW/Recording software are you using?

I have been using Sonar 5 x64 platform.

I have tried them all, in my opinion Sonar is the best on the market. Keep in mind, the soundcard and drivers are half the battle. Check out the RME Fireface. I have worked with dozens of sound cards, and the most stable and best sounding is the RME Fireface 800.

I was using Protools with the same issues! You should check Sonar out (www.Cakewalk.com)

I will be sticking with the MBox hardware. I'm operating on a limited budget. I've heard from other MBox users that it works great with other DAW systems.

Currently I have my eye on SONAR Home Studio 6. It appears to be able to do everything I want, my PC meets the hardware requirements, and the price is very good.

Re: Recording pals! What DAW/Recording software are you using?

Oooh ... I just noticed that ProTools users can get SONAR 6 Producer or Studio at a discount. Studio is $199 US! Kickass!

Re: Recording pals! What DAW/Recording software are you using?

I've been using cool edit pro (now Adobe Audition) for about 4/5 years now. It's been very solid and I've never had any problems with it.

Been running PT LE through a Mac for 4+ years without a quirk.

Sorry to hear your PC let you down.

Re: Recording pals! What DAW/Recording software are you using?

I use a Tascam 2488 for capturing everything and rough mixes. I export the files out to .wav and mix in Pro Tools on a Mac.

Tascam just came out with a new version of the 2488 so I imagine you'll see plenty of used ones for cheap soon

Greatest single non-guitar purchase I ever made.

yeah, I should really add that I did pick up a fostex mr-8 unit so I can record in WAV on the fly and outside of a computer. then I stick it in the computer via usb and tweak stuff up, and sometimes send it back to the unit for mixing by hand (I like the lil' sliders).

Pfft ... hardware recorders are so 1997. :)

As I said in the other thread, that's the long term plan. I don't have $2,500 for a Mac Pro (the other models don't interest me that much) right now, so I need a quick and cheap solution. SONAR 6 Studio is looking really good. Way more features than PTLE even.

I'll check out Cubase SX3 too, but my one experience with their older product really turned me off. Maybe I owe it another chance.

Yeah yeah ... rub it in why dontcha! :)

Re: Recording pals! What DAW/Recording software are you using?

Mackie Tracktion 2, $150 with plenty of plug-ins. Don't let the price fool you, lots of bang for the buck and a very easy to use interface. I also have the last version of Emagic Logic Platinum that ran on PCs (before Apple bought them), I prefer Tracktion which cost way less.

Re: Recording pals! What DAW/Recording software are you using?

Logic 7.2 on a Mac with Waves plug ins.

Cheers...................wahwah
