recording problem

so ive been recording some tracks on my computer, and lately ive been trying to figure this amazingly annoying problem out. when i record something through the mic>mixer, and im listening to the track while im recording through the headphone jack in my mixer, the signal from the computer bleeds through, and records again. its not being picked up by the mic, either. its somehow going from the mixer itself back to the computer, along with whatever ive recorded with the mic.

anyone have any ideas??? thanks

Re: recording problem

Model of mixer? Computer? Program? More details, please.

It sounds like you may have a signal bus set up improperly.

If you're sending the computer sound to a channel bus, that's the problem right there. On mixers, it's fairly easy to send the signal to a monitor bus out, instead of to a channel. Route to monitor (headphones and speakers) only.

On record programs, it would be a similar issue. I suggest reading the manual/tutorial.

Re: recording problem

Not sure if it's a default option on all comuters or if it's something I've got that was added by something else, but my Windows Mixer has a "What U Hear" option for the Recording source. That, if enabled, will do what you're experiencing.

Re: recording problem

elaborate where this is found in the mixer please. is it windows XP?

This problem happens to me, i usually hear it in the background of vocal recordings, however its very quiet (even though i compress vocals harshly, -46db threshold). it doesnt bother me.

Re: recording problem

Double-click the speaker icon in the system tray (taskbar), or open Windows Mixer from your recording app (if it has that option - I use Adobe Audition and it has it) and select Options/Properties, then Recording, then see what's available. If "What U Hear" is one of the choices, and it has the "Enable" box checked, pick another one instead.

Re: recording problem

Actually it's not on all systems - I thought it was part of the standard Windows setup - maybe it's an advanced Windows setup feature? May have to install it from the CD, or download a media creation kit from MS?
Or it might be something installed by Creative Labs stuff like I've always had.

edit:
Actually, I just checked mine and it has the Creative Audigy logo on the corner, so it might be a Creative feature.

Re: recording problem

its weird, too... certain sounds come in on certain channels, even if i mute the channels on my mixer. like if i lay down a drum track, the kick will come in on the master, the hat will come in on channel 3, snare on 1, etc. and i have to turn down the slider on fl's mixer for it not to record (but then i cant hear it). i still want to be able to hear it, but i dont want it to go into the recording i make.

Re: recording problem

why are you sending the computer mix through the external mixer again? why not plug headphones into the computer as you're recording, and if you're micing an amp you could just leave one ear off the phones to hear what you're playing live, or have the listening level down low enough to hear your amp even though the phones. do you really need to hear the guitars "mixed in" with the music as you're recording?

Re: recording problem

well that was going to be my final solution if nothing else worked. its just easier to do it this way is all. my soundcard isnt all too great, and im a bit worried about latency issues with it until i get a new one.

CRAP i cant even do THAT!

i choose onyx in, my soundcard out, and either i cant hear anything, or all i can hear is the kick. and it still records into whatever i am recording through the mic... WHAT IS GOING ON????

:banghead:

Re: recording problem

You need to check the routing & assignments in both the recording software and the control panel/drivers for the mixers firewire settings.

Something is bussed together & seeing both/all inputs...

It has nothing to do with Windows control panel. Likely things are working under ASIO...

Re: recording problem

ok well the mackie control panel doesnt give me much.

how do i tell what is bussed together?

in the asio panel, i see two devices... my computer's main sound output and my mixer... and when i click on albert einstein's head, i get all of my channels, plus the main in andthe main out for my mixer, and then an in and out for my sound card. everything is running.

i cant find anything for firewire

Re: recording problem

On the Mackie Onyx series, the Firewire interface card is an optional extra. With the driver software installed, Windohs should present the individual in/outputs in a dialogue window. Your recording software should then permit you to select which input channels are directed where.

No wonder I opted for a Mac/MOTU/Logic set up. ;)
