Recording problems.

First off, What is coming out of my amp and whats coming out of my monitors are 2 completly different things. No matter what I do to my amps eq and roland vs-840 Including line input levels. The signal clips so bad it muds everything up. I've placed my mic(a shure 57) in any position you can think of. turned the line input levels down to where i shouldn't even get any sound and all i get is low end mud. you can hear the clipping loud as hell but can't hear any mids or highs. And before i'm told to turn my lows down, they are as far down at the monent as they go, all you can hear out of the amp right now is highs. Somebody help please, I'm lost.

Re: Recording problems.

Does the VS840 have a limiter you can insert on the record channel? Does it have a pad to ingage to reduce the signal coming in? I had a VS880 (I think that was it?) anyhow, if the signal is clipping coming into the VS you'll have to try and sort it out on that machine. You shouldn't have to change up your amp, guitar and mic to get a good signal coming in.

It does have a limiter, I didn't even think to use it during the recording. I was applying it while mixing. That may make a big difference on what I hear coming thru my monitor. I'll add some compression too just to be on the safe side.
Well, lets go see how this works.

Re: Recording problems.

Thanks dude, that works. Well it's part of it. I figured while I was at it. I would cut the stereo chorus on and drop the chorus level while keeping the stereo effect on. Now it sounds more like it's supposed to.
I feel like an idiot some times.

Re: Recording problems.

This was the first time I have added the chorus, but I am gonna take it out it does something funny I can't put my finger on. the limiter comes from the effects processor but it has no real tone change to it, all it does is limit what I want it to. But in the end shouldn't I be able to record dry and add my effects like a limiter later in the mix and still get the desired effect?
I'm kinda new to the recording arena, so i'm still learning. But it is getting better.

Re: Recording problems.

Yeah, you should be able to adjust the input gain. Those VS machines are really complicated, all the menus and stuff. I'd read through the manual on recording a good signal again. There maybe some hidden level adjustments on that machine.

Re: Recording problems.

You are right again, It has a seperate line in gain controll, there just isn't a knob for it. You have to go into the input menu to find it. This little roland has more stuff than i originaly thought. Not everything has a knob, you have to controll it in the individual menu screens. This thing is worse than a boss gt-8 or gt-10. but once you find the stuff on it you're looking for its pretty easy.

That's how I remember it. I had the one with the Jaz cartridges and they would lock up and you couldn't work, you had to send them to roland to unlock them then you could go back to work and lock them up again. :banghead:

Re: Recording problems.

Damn it! this thing had a line in eq the whole time And I didn't know it. it was set like a smiley face. With a reduction in line gain and a line in eq shift it sounds so much better.
Now it sounds like my amp.

Re: Recording problems.

There's probably more too! LOL

There is more here than I know what to do with. I have a whole ton of options I just found only for the recording phase. Then others for editing, some for just virtual tracks and more for mixingdown and mastering.
LOL! I thought you just pushed record on this thing and dump it to pc.
This is amazing! Now I get why they cost so much back in the day.
I could record a fart and make it sound like a warm summer breeze.
