Recording troubles with Cubase

Ok so I just got all my recording gear today and im having issues recording with it its a Sm 57 plugged into a presonus firebox into my computer into cubase LE.. so I can record one track on the cubase like a rythym well then I want to go and record a solo track to put over the rythym but I want the rythym track to play in the backround while i record it. When i click to add a new track and then record all it does is play back the rythym clip i recorded and it wont record the new music im playing. Its as if the microphone turns off when recording the second track while the first is playing... im assuming im not setting it up correctly or something? someone please tell me how to do this right..

Are you record arming the track? As in making the little R button flash red?

im assuming you mean the enable record button and yes if you mean that. I figured out a way to do it though... im sure this isnt the right way but for now it works... audio 1 file only records if i have the micced plugged into the 1st pre amp on the firebox and if i wanna record a solo or somethin on another track i hafta plug the mic into the other mic preamp...

Sounds like you need to configure your ASIO Devices & then set up the "ASIO Connections" in CuBase so you can access the hardware ins/outs by assigning the corresponding ASIO device to each track's input or output.

Know what I mean? I don't currently use CuBase, but I used it a lot in the past... can't remember the specific menus you need to access, but it has to do with the Audio Hardware settings and ASIO settings.

the other thing to try is, leave the mic plugged into input 1. Record the rhythm track, open up track two. Open the mixer, above "track 2" there should be somethng that says either "input1 or input2" make sure that the appropriate input is selected.

Ok ya so im good with that but new problem... When im playing back my songs itll do fine and then itll start getting choppy as in like itll skip a beat or two.... how do i correct this?

you've got the same problem I had. I think the best explaination is your computer can almost handle cubase but not really. I eventually fried a chip on my motherboard. It was either from porn, cubase, or ROM video games. I don't think a typical home computer can handle 24 tracks of audio going on with plug-ins and other programs running in the background.

Its a new dell laptop i bought with 2 ghz processor and 1 gig of ram sometimes it happens sometimes it doesnt like if i stop a couple times and play again itll stop

How many other applications do you have running at the same time as you're running Cubase?

None really.. Cubase and Mcafee firewall and maybe msn messenger.

You might need to adjust the read/write buffers or latency settings in CuBase. My old computer used to do that jerky stuff quite often with my Emu 1820m. Not much of a problem with the new computer (dual-core AMD64 4400+ w/ 2 gigs dual-channel RAM + 2 SATA2 hard disks).

EDIT: Killing the firewall and Messenger (and maybe unplugging the net cable) while recording might help too. Those apps could be contributing to bandwidth spikes.

You're using one computer for the interknot AND recording?


Ummmm...

That's not really ideal to say the least.

Aside from checking and adjusting the audio card latency the only thing you can do is turn off applications & throw more ram in the machine.

The more plug-ins you use the more you'll need too...

How many tracks are you trying to record/play simultaneously? I've got a Mac G4 laptop with only 512 MB of RAM, and I can play back 20+ tracks while laying down a guitar line without a problem -- I just need to make sure I'm not running more than one or two other applications at the same time.
