hi guys,
I hope you kind guys can help, if I change the rectifier valve on my valve amp, do I need to rebias the amp ????? I know I need to for power tubes,

all the best, bluesfloyd.

Re: rectifier valve

It depends. If you change to another rectifier of the same type, the voltage to the power tubes should remain roughly the same, meaning the bias should be fine. If you change to one of the other types of compatible rectifier, the power tube plate voltage will change and therefore the bias should be checked.

Re: rectifier valve

Also...Stick with the same rectifier..They all require different amperage and some are directly heated and some aren't.This has to do with warmup time on the tube.If your amp calls for a 5AR4 don't use a 5U4 etc..

Re: rectifier valve

Do you know how to bias your amp.?
If you do...I would not even ask...I would just check it.
But your question is kind of vague, as others have mentioned. Switch from a Sino Y3 to a JJ Y3.?
Who knows what the voltage drop will be between the 2 tubes...they CAN be all over the map.
That said, there probably will not be a big enough of a difference to throw your amp into a Too Cold or Too Hot scenario, so it is probably not "necessary".
But like I say...if you can bias your amp...why ask, I always check the B+ when I change the rectifier...even if it is the same brand.
best

Re: rectifier valve

Be careful inside that amp! If it were me,I'd check both plate voltages and the milliamp or millivolt current readings at your output tubes(bias)...I use 1 ohm cathode resistors across my output tubes and I measure the current across those..

Unless of course your old rectifier tube went south, then you won't know what your original voltages were? If you get a decent quality rectifier tube, your volatges should be ok.

What amp are we talking about?

Re: rectifier valve

hi, stratdeluxer97
the amp I use is a VOX AC15 HANDWIRED, great to get help on this subject from you guys above,

all the best, bluesfloyd.
