Rectoverb/Rectifier PreAmp Tube Thoughts/Suggestions

So what do you guys use in your preamp section tube-wise?

What type of sound are you going for?

I know I will be using an AT7 in the PI.

I know V1 has a large part in shaping the tone but how much shaping does everything else actually do? Would it be ok to just get a better tube for V1 (and the 12at7 in the pi) or is it worth it to retube the whole thing?

I think I will be ordering Ruby EL34BSTR's from Doug's Tubes soon, so I would like some suggestions for the rest of the tubes so I can order those at the same time.

Re-tube and I like the Electroharmonix in all positions except # 2 or 3 . I use a JJ tesla in one of those positions as it fattens up the tone a little. I have tried numerous tubes in alot of positions and that is my preference. I use a 1999 2 channel dual rec.

I have a full retube kit from Eurotubes in my Rectoverb (high gain graded ECC83S and 6L6GC) and I love the tones I've been getting. The gain is thicker and more complex, and the cleans were not compromised but were actually warmed up a bit. Mine is a Series 1 head.

i have a series 2 single recto, and i have all JJ's in my preamp. i suppose you could say i'm going for tones in the ballpark of thrice's old stuff, and these tubes seem to do pretty well.

Thanks guys...

I know that the JJ pre tubes are darker than most...do you guys find that they still cut through in a band situation?

Re: Rectoverb/Rectifier PreAmp Tube Thoughts/Suggestions

From what I hear, the high-gain graded pre tubes don't have that dark quality. I've also heard that JJ Tesla recently redesigned their 12AX7s, so that problem might be fixed in general now.

I have personally had no problems cutting through the mix.

Re: Rectoverb/Rectifier PreAmp Tube Thoughts/Suggestions

i have the "older" (i suppose you could say) JJ's in my preamp, from before they redesigned them, and i have absolutely no problem cutting through. i actually drown out everyone else if i'm not careful.
